Colchester United head coach John McGreal wants to repay chairman Robbie Cowling for his off-the-pitch support by getting some vital results in the final three months of their League Two campaign.

The U’s boss says he is delighted with the backing he has received from Cowling, director of football Tony Humes and Head of Player Resources Iain Moody in last month’s transfer window, with five new players arriving at the Weston Homes Community Stadium.

Sean Murray, Dean Brill, Rekeil Pyke, Tommy O’Sullivan and Eli Phipps were all brought in in January, as Colchester bolstered their squad for the final 19 games of the season.

The U’s return to action at Blackpool tomorrow after a two-week break between fixtures and boss McGreal is looking for his side to produce the goods.

McGreal said: “Robbie (Cowling), Tony (Humes) and Iain (Moody) getting bodies over the line shows an element of where the club wants to go.

“They did a terrific job to get in the bodies that we had identified.

“To come away with the likes of those guys is great business for us.

“Hopefully, we can back that up by getting the right results on the pitch.

“Is this the strongest squad we’ve had since I took over as first-team head coach? I would possibly say that’s the case, especially with the injured boys coming back now.

“We have that extra experience with Doug (Loft) and Matt (Briggs) coming back.

“As well as those two coming back in, we have Shaun (Murray) as a great asset and the goalkeeper that I felt we needed.”

Colchester’s long trip to Blackpool tomorrow kicks off a busy month for McGreal’s men.

The U’s play seven matches in the space of 24 days in February, where they will be looking to move back up the table having dropped out of the play-off places last weekend.

“There are a lot of games in this short month so it’s all to play for,” said McGreal.

“We’re really looking forward to it.

“The boys look refreshed coming back after that little bit of a break.

“It has been good for us and hopefully they’ll all be fit and will give me some hard choices to make in picking the squad.”
