Luke Prosser insists Colchester United’s four-match winless streak in League Two does not make them a bad team.

The U’s were beaten 2-0 at unbeaten Carlisle United and after an impressive start to the campaign have slipped to 11th in the table, having taken two points from a possible 12.

However, Colchester are only four points off the automatic promotion places and were the better side at Brunton Park in the first half, before second-half goals from Jason Kennedy and former U’s striker, Jabo Ibehre secured victory for the hosts.

Prosser admits recent results have been frustrating but the U’s skipper stressed it is still early days for their new-look side – and is fully confident that they can win plenty of games, this season.

Prosser said: “It’s frustrating as we know we’re more than capable of winning games but it’s not like we’re playing badly.

“When we played Crawley last week it was probably our best performance and that showed in the confidence that we played with in the first half (at Carlisle).

“This week definitely doesn’t make us a bad team – we’re all disappointed with the results but there’s more than enough out there for us to win plenty of games, this year.

“As long as we keep plugging away and keep working on our mistakes and be tighter at the back, I’m sure we can have a good season.

“We’ll keep going – we’re a good, tight-knit bunch of lads and it’s early days yet.

“It’s a long season and we’re still a new bunch, so it will take time to gel.”

Both of Carlisle’s goals came from set-pieces and defender Prosser admitted that was frustrating.

“We’re all extremely disappointed to come a long way and come away with nothing,” said Prosser.

“We’re disappointed for the fans who made the long journey up.

“We conceded from two set pieces which is not like us, so we’re disappointed.

“We were on top in the first half and we played really well, even in spells the second half.

“Szmods (Sammie Szmodics) had a good chance when we were 1-0 down and maybe if that goes in, it maybe turns the game a bit.

“If you can get goals when you’re on top like that, it gives you a boost confidence-wise and I thought we had more than enough chances to get something out of the game.

“But Carlisle will be pretty good this year and they had a little go at everything.”
