COLCHESTER United first-team coach John McGreal says new signing Craig Slater has all of the qualities he is looking for in a midfielder.

Slater has become the U’s sixth senior summer signing after joining the U’s on a two-year deal from Scottish Premiership club Kilmarnock, for an undisclosed fee.

McGreal said: “Craig’s a dynamic midfielder and he has all of the attributes.

“He has a wide range of passing and he can get about the pitch and closing down.

“He’s played in the Scottish Premiership so he has got a good background and for us to attract him is fantastic for us.

“We’re just looking for him to move forward and move through the divisions hopefully with the club but who knows, he may step on himself.

“Craig wants to test himself in England and I think that’s what these boys from up north want to do.

“I think Aberdeen were quite interested in him too and a couple of other teams in League One.

“But with our facilities and how we want to do things we’ve got to change our mentality and psyche – we want to win games of football.

“We haven’t won enough games of football over the last couple of years so that’s what we’re trying to get into our boys.

“We’re trying to be positive and bring the club forward as a whole because we’ve got fantastic support who follow us length and breadth.”
