Joe Edwards has signed for League One side Walsall after leaving Colchester United.

The U's players' player of the year will join the Saddlers on a two-year deal, once his contract at the Weston Homes Community Stadium expires on July 1.

Edwards was one of Colchester's most consistent players in an otherwise disappointing League One campaign last year, performing well at both full-back and in central midfield.

The 25-year-old made it clear at the end of the season that he wanted to pursue his options and has now secured a move to Walsall, who reached the League One play-offs.

Edwards scored twice in 45 league and cup appearances for Colchester last season, after joining them from Yeovil Town last summer.

Meanwhile, former U's loanee Elliot Lee has signed for Championship-bound Barnsley, after leaving West Ham United.

The forward will be reunited with former U's midfielder George Moncur, who agreed terms with the Reds earlier this week.
