COLCHESTER United head coach John McGreal says the club are working hard to bring in some of their close-season targets.

The U's are preparing for life in League Two after suffering relegation last season and have been linked with AFC Wimbledon attacker Andy Barcham and Inverness defender Danny Devine.

However, McGreal says that although there is no firm news yet, the club are actively trying to bolster their squad.

“It’s an on-going process and there’s nothing to concrete at the moment," he said.

“We’ve been chatting with a lot of players and we’re working hard behind the scenes to bring one or two of our targets in.

“We’ve been chatting to a couple of players since the season finished but we may have to be patient, with a lot of players currently away on holiday.

“We’re back in four weeks but I think we’ll be going right until the end."

One player who has already signed a one-year contract is Ben Wyatt.

The youngster spent last season with Ryman League neighbours Maldon & Tiptree.

And McGreal says the full-back has the right mentality and hunger that the club are looking for, especially from their younger players.

“Ben trained a lot with me with the under-21 squad last season but didn’t get game time," he said.

“He was player of the season by a long way for Maldon and Tiptree and he’s a kid with a great attitude.

“He’s a former young player at Norwich City and Ipswich Town and he’s another young player with something to prove.

“He has the kind of hunger that we’re trying to instil into these young players."

Colchester are fifth favourites for the League Two title, according to bookies Skybet and Paddy Power.

Portsmouth, Luton, Doncaster and Leyton Orient are leading the way.

“League Two will be a tough league next season but we know it’s about what we do," added McGreal.

“It’s how we approach it mentally, because as a club we’ve not been in that division for a long time.

“I expect it to be a very competitive league."
