Colchester United manager Tony Humes praised four-goal hero Macauley Bonne after his side progressed to the FA Cup second round with a 6-2 triumph at Wealdstone.

Bonne, who hit a hat-trick in the U's 8-0 Essex Senior Cup win over Hornchurch last Tuesday, was in lethal form at Grosvenor Vale as Colchester saw off their National League South opponents.

Humes said: “Macauley is a goalscorer and he took his opportunity, so fair play to the kid.”

"It's been a fantastic week for Macauley with seven goals in two cup-ties.

"It'll do wonders for him - we know his ability and we know that he's in a development stage of his career.

"He's not there by a long stretch but it's done him no harm whatsoever.

"It'll give him the confidence to go in there and score goals and it's great for him."

George Moncur and Marvin Sordell were also on target for Colchester, as they made it through to the second round.

“Overall, I thought we did things very well but it should have been more comfortable," said Humes.

“I thought that we were in control of the game so it was a case of us sticking to what we were doing.

“When we went 2-1 down I didn’t fear the worst – I was confident with the amount of opportunities that we had created that we would do it again in the second half.

“We should have been massively comfortable at half-time, because we had so many opportunities in the first half that we didn’t take.

“It was about us doing things professionally and if you look at the problems we caused ourselves, they were few and I thought that it was a comfortable performance."
