Macauley Bonne hit four goals as Colchester United progressed to the second round of the FA Cup with victory at Wealdstone.

George Moncur and Marvin Sordell also scored, as the U’s ran out 6-2 winners at Grosvenor Vale, against their battling National League South opponents.

Colchester boss Tony Humes made five changes to his side for the trip to the Vale.

Bonne, goalkeeper Elliot Parish, Tom Lapslie, Frankie Kent and Joe Edwards all started.

Jamie Jones, Owen Garvan, Darren Ambrose and George Elokobi all missed out through injury, while Tosin Olufemi dropped to the bench.

Colchester almost fell behind inside three minutes - Scott Davies’ superb long-range effort appeared to be heading in until Parish reached out an arm to palm over the bar for a corner.

Colchester peppered the Wealdstone goal in the minutes that followed though.

Bonne blasted over at the far post from Matthew Briggs' low cross and George Moncur’s shot was deflected away for a corner, while Colchester had a shout for a penalty when Callum Harriott tumbled under Josh McLeod-Urquhart’s challenge after the winger had weaved his way into the area.

Harriott screwed a good chance wide from close range and the U’s came even closer to scoring midway through the first half when Bonne's fine effort from the edge of the area rattled the outside of the post.

Wealdstone goalkeeper Jonathan North pushed Bonne’s effort from the edge of the area away at the near post and Davies somehow scrambled Moncur’s shot off the line, as the U’s piled the pressure on.

They eventually made their breakthrough in the 26th minute through Bonne, who turned the ball home from inside the area after Briggs’ cross was not cleared, following a prolonged period of U's pressure.

But against the run of play, Wealdstone got back on level terms just after the half hour.

Veteran striker Jefferson Louis stroked home from the spot after Edwards had brought down Lucien in the area, following a swift free-kick from Davies.

Colchester thought they had gone back in front ten minutes before half-time when Harriott's corner hit Tom Eastman and then Hudson-Odoi but was deemed not to have crossed the line.

And Wealdstone took the lead three minutes later when Briggs' attempted clearance from Lucien’s corner hit Hudson-Odoi and went in at the far post.

However, Colchester were quickly back on level terms when Bonne glanced in Briggs’ looping cross at the far post, after good work by Harriott.

The U’s might easily have been ahead at the break when former Wealdstone loanee Marvin Sordell sliced wide at the near post from Edwards’ low cross, just before half-time.

And Colchester regained their lead less than two minutes after the interval through Bonne, who completed his first professional hat-trick from a few yards after Marvin Sordell had burst down the left and picked him out.

The U’s gave themselves further breathing space in the tie midway through the second half when Moncur fired in his seventh of the season, after being picked out by Harriott’s short corner on the edge of the area.

Parish made good saves to deny Louis and substitute Jonny Wright, as the clock ticked down.

But Moncur finished well with nine minutes remaining with a shot that flew in off Bonne following good work by Sordell and Harriott.

And Sordell blasted in a sixth late on to wrap up Colchester's win and see them through to the second round.
