George Moncur has vowed to maintain his electric form after scooping the PFA Fans’ League One Player of the Month award.

The Colchester United midfielder’s eye-catching performances in September have been rewarded, after he landed the accolade.

Moncur bagged five goals in as many league games to help lift the U’s into the top half of the table.

The 22-year-old saw off competition from Coventry’s Adam Armstrong and Stuart Bevon of Burton Albion, to win the award.

He told the Daily Gazette: “It’s great to have another achievement for the season.

“It’s started really well for me personally and I’m overwhelmed by the award.

“The fact that the award is voted for by the fans makes it even better.

“They’re the ones who watch me week in, week out in League One and I’d like to thank them for voting for me.

“I was up against some really good players and Adam Armstrong got the Player of the Month award, in August.

“To beat the players I did to get the award was brilliant.

“Hopefully, I can carry this on throughout the whole of the season and I’ll keep trying to work hard on my game.”

Moncur finished last season in fine form and has carried that on into the start of the new League One campaign.

“It’s about having belief in your ability,” said the former West Ham youngster, who has made more than 50 league appearances for the U’s.

“It was my first season in League One last year and I got a real feel for it.

“I’ve trained really hard and every time I go on the pitch and try and perform well.

“My main aim is to pick up more goals and more wins.

“We’re in good form as a team and we’re working hard to keep moving up the division.”

An expert panel including Sky Sports football pundits Paul Merson, Ian Holloway and Peter Beagrie produced a list of contenders for the award.

Fans then voted on skysports.com for who they thought was League One’s best player from the initial shortlist which included Colchester’s loanee keeper Jamie Jones.

The shortlist was then reduced to three final contenders and Moncur received the most votes, to claim the award.
