Tony Humes wants more people from the town to rally behind Colchester United.

And the U’s boss believes this weekend’s Open Day at the Weston Homes Community Stadium is the perfect opportunity to champion the club’s many qualities.

Humes said: “The club is growing massively and to get more and more people from Colchester involved is what we want.

“We want the fanbase to grow and more people coming to watch us and show the fantastic support that they did at the end of last season.

“We hope we can produce the football we’re looking to play on a consistent basis, because that becomes more of an attraction at the stadium on matchdays - it offers a great experience to the local community.”

Humes and his players will be in attendance at the popular annual event tomorrow, where a host of attractions and activities will be on offer.

The U’s boss, along with chairman Robbie Cowling, will host a question and answer session, while budding players will get the chance to have a kick about with the club’s Football in the Community coaches.

Colchester supporters will also get the chance to snap up the club’s brand new replica kits, which will be unveiled for the first time tomorrow.

Humes said: “Historically, over the last few years the Open Day has been a great event.

“It’s been very well supported by both the fans and the community of Colchester.

“It’s great for people to come and see what’s going on at the football club, not just first team level but also what’s going on below with things like Football in the Community.

“There’s an awful lot going on at the football club that’s good.

“We were named Family Club of the Year last season which was fantastic and it shows that we’re growing in many areas, not just with what’s going on with the first team."

The U’s Open Day takes place between 11am and 4pm on Sunday – admission is free.
