Colchester United manager Tony Humes has ruled out a summer move for Elliott Hewitt.

Hewitt, who spent five-and-a-half months on loan with the U’s last season, is a free agent after being released by Ipswich Town.

The 21-year-old made 24 appearances for Colchester during his loan spell, scoring once.

Hewitt proved his versatility, playing at both right-back and in a more advanced role during his time with the U’s.

However, Colchester have strengthened their right-sided options with the capture of Richard Brindley on a two-year deal, earlier this summer.

And U’s boss Humes says it is unlikely Hewitt will return to the Weston Homes Community Stadium, on a permanent basis.

Humes said: “We’re not considering a move for Elliott at this time.

“Richard Brindley came in on loan for us at the end of last season and did very well.

“We’ve now signed him permanently and he’s committed to us for the next two years.

“The right-back position is one we have covered, with Tosin Olufemi and Kane Vincent-Young there too.”

Colchester’s players are continuing their preparations for the new season, this week.

They are gearing up for their first pre-season friendly, a trip to play Ryman League division one north side Heybridge Swifts on Saturday.

That will be followed up with games at Brentwood Town (July 14) and Bishop’s Stortford (July 18).

The U’s will then host a West Ham United XI (July 21), Leyton Orient (July 25), Ipswich Town (July 28) and a Fulham XI (August 1).

Colchester’s League One campaign starts with a home match against Blackpool, on August 8.

“We’ll be looking for the players to be focused and to implement our ideas straight away,” said Humes.

“We have seven pre-season games arranged now - there are three non-league games to start with and then the four home matches.

“We do have a few home games but that’s just the way it’s worked out.

“It’s good to have a Premier League team in West Ham at home and that one in particular will create interest for the fans.

“Ipswich have come to us for the last couple of seasons and that will be another good test for us, as will the Leyton Orient and Fulham games.”
