Alex Wynter is happy to continue as Colchester United’s Mr Versatile next season.

But the defender says he would dearly love to establish himself in one position in the U’s starting line-up.

Wynter has played all across the back four for Colchester since joining them on a permanent basis from Crystal Palace, last January.

And the 21-year-old has also occupied a central midfield role for Tony Humes’ side, in the final stages of their final-day win over Preston North End.

Wynter says he believes he can use his ability to play in different positions as a plus point, in the 2015-16 campaign.

However, he admits he is aiming to nail down a regular starting spot in one area of the team.

Wynter said: “I always want to play in every game and be involved, no matter what.

“I’ve set out to get games and I hope that next season, I can establish myself in one position.

“But if the gaffer wants me to play somewhere else and asks me to do a job, I think I can use my versatility as a strength.

“I do feel I’ve grown as a player this season and hopefully that will help me, too.”

Wynter played his part in helping Colchester secure their League One status for another season.

He made 18 appearances for the U’s in the second half of the campaign, having spent the opening four months of the season on loan at Portsmouth.

“I’m still buzzing – there were a few times where people wrote us off but we always felt that we could do it,” said Wynter.

“As the games got chalked off there were more doubters coming out but we stuck together.

“No disrespect to League Two but we didn’t want to go down a level.

“I enjoyed my time at Portsmouth and I don’t think that there’s a massive difference between the two divisions.

“But as professionals, you want to play at the highest level you can and we were relieved to stay up.”

Wynter is enjoying his first-ever summer as a Colchester player, having been at former club Crystal Palace since the age of nine.

He added: “It’s much better to get a pre-season under your belt with the team that you’re going to be with and I’m looking forward to that.”
