Alex Wynter insists Colchester United’s players still believe they can keep the club in League One.

But the U’s defender admits they must win both of their next two games if they are to boost their survival chances.

Wynter says morale is still good in the Colchester squad, despite a run of three straight defeats.

The U’s are preparing for their vital home game against fellow strugglers Crawley Town, this weekend.

And that is followed by another massive match against bottom side Yeovil Town at the Weston Homes Community Stadium, next Tuesday.

Tony Humes’ side lie three points adrift of safety with 11 games remaining, after Coventry City drew with Bradford City last night and Yeovil lost to Bristol City.

Wynter said: “The next two games are massive for us.

“They are both against teams around us and teams we need to be beating.

“We still have belief and we’re still feeling positive.

“We’re still confident that we can get out of trouble.

“We’ve done in the last few seasons and confidence and morale is still high.

“I came in a bit later last season but we’ve got longer now to save ourselves.”

Colchester fell to a 2-1 defeat at play-off chasing Rochdale, last Saturday.

But despite the result, Wynter felt the U’s display was an improvement on their poor showing against Notts County, last Tuesday.

“It was a more positive performance but we felt down, because we didn’t have anything to show for it,” said Wynter.

“We were disappointed - it was two lapses of concentration that cost us.

“We were in the game for most of it and we created a lot of opportunities.

“We dug in and got ourselves back in the game.

“Apart from the first 20 minutes when they were in the ascendency, I think it was a pretty even game.

“But we know we have to cut those individual errors out.”

Wynter played at right-back for the second successive game for Colchester, following Sean Clohessy’s omission from the side.

“I’m happy doing a job anywhere for the team,” added the former Crystal Palace youngster.

“I showed at Colchester last year that I can play anywhere across the back four.

“I’m willing to fill in wherever it helps the club to get out of the position we’re in at the moment.”
