MACAULEY Bonne has set his sights on more goals after making a triumphant return to Colchester United’s starting line-up.

The 19-year-old striker, who had not previously started for the U’s since December 2013, bagged their second goal in a superb 3-2 victory over Bristol City.

It was Bonne’s first senior goal for nearly 15 months, with the former Colchester youth-team player finding his first-team opportunities limited under both current boss Tony Humes and his predecessor, Joe Dunne.

And after making a surprise and long-awaited return to the U’s side, Bonne is now hungry for more starting opportunities.

Bonne s aid: “I feel over the moon that I’ve had another start and another goal.

“I have a point to prove at the minute and I wanted to show that to the home fans.

“My aim now is for more starts and more goals, between now and the rest of the season.

“I didn’t want to get my chance and then not take it.

“When I found out I was starting I was buzzing and I just wanted to get through it as much as I could.

“I built myself up and thought ‘today is my day and I’m going to make the most of it’.”

“I was waiting for a long time for a start and I wanted to take my opportunity and show what I can do.”

Colchester were already leading through fellow academy product Tom Lapslie’s header before Bonne netted their second goal after 14 minutes.

The Zimbabwe international directed a fine header past Bristol City goalkeeper Frank Fielding from Matt Briggs’ pinpoint cross, to double the U’s lead.

Chris Porter added a third 12 minutes later and although James Tavernier and Aden Flint gave the Robins a fighting chance in the second half, Colchester held on for an important victory.

“Before the game, I had a feeling that both Tom (Lapslie) and I would score,” said Bonne, who has now bagged four goals for the U’s since making his senior debut in October, 2013.

“Matt Briggs made a great run and when he crossed, the defenders were flat-footed.

“I was going to volley it but I got my head on it and powered it towards goal,” the teenage striker added.
