Tony Humes believes his new signing Chris Porter has a point to prove after quitting Sheffield United to join Colchester United.

Porter has signed an 18-month deal with the U’s, after ending his three-and-a-half year stint with the Blades.

The 6ft 1in striker featured only five times for Sheffield United this season and found his first-team opportunities limited at Bramall Lane.

U’s boss Humes said: “Chris has had a good career and he wants to prove a point that he’s still a good player.

“The fact that he’s moved down here from Sheffield shows that he wants to give his career a real go.

“He had a contract until the end of the season that he could have sat on and waited.

“But he wanted to play league football and once he saw what we were about, he jumped at the chance.”

Meanwhile, Humes feels he has signed a versatile player in Matthew Briggs.

The Millwall defender, who can play at centre-back or left-back, has arrived at the U’s on loan until the end of the season.

“Matthew is a left-sided centre-half or left-back who is very versatile,” added Humes.

“He’s of a good calibre and he’s played Premier League football.

“He’s another good addition to the squad who will strengthen us up.”
