Tony Humes says he would love a home draw in the FA Cup second round following Colchester United’s thumping win at non-league Gosport Borough.

Clinical U’s thrashed the Boro’ 6-3 at Privett Park to progress from the first round of the competition for the first time since 2011 and book their place in tonight’s draw.

First-half goals from Sanchez Watt, Gavin Massey, Freddie Sears and Alex Gilbey put Colchester ahead, despite Gosport pulling one back through leading goalscorer Justin Bennett.

And further strikes from Sears and substitute Sammie Szmodics’ first professional goal helped the U’s progress, despite further goals from Bennett and substitute Lee Wort for the Conference South side.

U’s boss Humes said: “Ideally, it would be great to have a home draw in the second round but we’ll wait and see what comes out of the hat.

“We’d like the opportunity to play against a bigger club and that would be another challenge for the players but we’ll see what we’re given.”

The second-round draw for the FA Cup takes place at 7pm tonight.

Colchester will be number two in the draw.
