Colchester United have signed pacy attacker Jack Compton from League One rivals Portsmouth.

Compton, 24, who is a pacy left winger who can also play in attack, has made 13 appearances for Pompey this season and played against the U's earlier this season.

Compton, who was born in Wales, has also played for the likes of Bradford City, St Johnstone and Falkirk during his career.

Colchester boss Joe Dunne has also confirmed that loan duo Jabo Ibehre and Josh Thompson have been offered permanent deals at the club.

What scout spotted this player? or did they just pull his name out of a hat. Certainly not a goal scorer which we need, and certainly does not add any further quality to the team. That's why Pompey got in Paul Benson on loan from Swindon, someone to get them goals, and a player that would have also done a reasonble job for us.

The lad has certainly travelled some miles in his short career, he's done stints at Weston-super Mare, Lewes and Havant & Waterlooville as well as his appearances North of the border.

I must admit, I can't ever remember an announcement of a new signing after a match. That's a new one on me.

Read this from one of Pompey's fan websites..".Pompey fans probably won't be too sad to see Compton go as he was too inconsistent despite having some pace and the ability to deliver the odd decent cross. However, he would often go missing in games and end up being taken off for his lack of impact..."......not exactly good reading!

What's The Story? says...

Funny how people can see what they want in a signing, I've seen plenty of Portsmouth fans commenting positively on Compton. Let's give the lad a chance before writing him off, hey?

crazycomments, I agree Benson is a good player but he's scored none in four for Portsmouth, so that hasn't exactly worked for them, has it.

Well I for one hope he hits the floor running.

I would like to say that I cannot believe what I am reading above, but with you mob, nothing suprises me.

Giving Dunne and the lads a hard time is understandable with the current situation, but the welcome that he is getting on here is just nasty and rude.

everyone had written off Cureton when we signed him, and look what happened.

Nice one Dunne, a well needed winger. I hope he does a brilliant job, all we need now is a forward that can actually shoot towards goal, so at least we can score some goals.

I hope he does a briliant job as well Steve, and i'm sure he will try to impress in his first few games. The trouble is I cant see him being anything better than what we already have at the club. Joe is showing some signs of desperation now, and for me signing two quality players over five run of the mill players would be a better option.

They were also well spotted by Arsenal's Scouts. We need more players from youth/reserve teams from Premiership.

To all the posters/ bloggers on here...A VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR. Keep the faith in the blue and white and let's see what happens. It's far from perfect right now and looks precarious for sure but JD did a lot right at the start of his reign and beat better teams than we're losing to now. Watt and Eastmond aside there were 9 other players each time alongside them who looked sharp in those games too. I'm not naive or blinkered but I am a glass half full kind of person. Joe will get this right, We have a Col utd man in charge. He, like Ward, have a lot of players who have let him down who are too comfortable who have little competition for their places. Let's hope whoever comes in can make them ship up or ship out. Kem Izzett, (who I know splits opinion right down the middle) has said as much on an interview in the EADT. If we can get a team of 11 who want to play for us and have that passion then i think we'll be fine. Let's all get down there boxing day, take an extra fan and see what can happen. Merry Christmas to all and let's smash Brentford on boxing day.

Merry Christmas Eddy, and to everyone else. I agree with just about everything you say. Kem was right to say that some players are not pulling their weight, and they know who they are. We need to see the back of these people but of course they will not go till their contracts expire. We have some decent players, who haven't all had a fair run till recently, and they could yet save us from relegation. I expect good results against Brentford and Swindon. Up the U's.
