Joe Dunne was pleased after seeing his Colchester United side end Stevenage's unbeaten record with a 1-0 win this afternoon.

Sanchez Watt grabbed the U's winner early in the second half with a fine strike, minutes after Boro' had midfielder Anthony Grant sent off for a second bookable offence.

It was Colchester's third win in their opening four league games under Dunne, following his appointment as manager last month.

Dunne said: “It’s a good win for us; a win is a win irrespective of who it’s against.

“It’s three wins out of four and it’s a good return at the moment.

“But we’ve set a standard and we have to keep at it.

“It was a narrow win in terms of the scoreline but we should enjoy it, because we played a top side."

Today was the first game I could get to since Dunne took over. I couldn't believe what a difference I was seeing. Joe has taken us from a team who looked certain for relegation to a team who could possibly make the play-offs.

The three loan players were fantastic and made a huge difference, plus inspired some of more regular players. It was great coming away from WHCS not feeling all doom and gloom.

The scoreline was flattering at only 1-0 as Stevenage were played off the park for most of the match.

One tiny little moan, Henderson, stop acting like a spoilt little child. You didn't get a foul so accept it. Perhaps it's because you have form on going over too easy as to why you didn't get the decision. You had the chance the cross the ball twice to players in better positions to score in an open goal, instead you were greedy and for that reason it left the match much more nail-biting than it should have been. Rant over.

Well done Joe, Well done U's and well done to everyone involved at Colchester united for turning round what was a dire situation.

Up the U's

P.S. Anyone who hasn't been since JW left, I can honestly recommend you come back and see a completely different team.

i suppose we have the spainish to thank for the passing game we all seem to play now.but you don't get point's for passes.if we had got more men in the box when we had the ball i'm sure we would have scored more than one.we have some great ball players that joe is now forming into a complete unit,i only wish they would be a little more direct.stilll it was 2 much needed points.

This was a very good performance and an even better result. I do however, agree with 'wellnow' above, the winning margin could and should have been greater than the one goal. We seem very loathe to hit the box with enough positive runs when crosses are about to be knocked in.

However, I don't want to take anything away from the players on this occasion as they all played some delightful football. Well done Joe and the boys, now lets roll up those sleves and get us up the table.

I would echo another of the earlier comments to fans who in recent times have deserted the WHCS. "Come back" because you're missing some really good football played by The U's these days!

Although I do agree with the above 2 and that it should have been a cricket score yesterday, I think we only created that amount of chances because of the amount passes and the way we kept possession. I think we were just unlucky that it didn't go in the net a couple more times.
It shows how much we've come on in little over a fortnight that were now complaining that we only beat 2nd in the league 1.0

Has to be said that Mark Cousins kept us in it during the first half with that fingertip save and goalmouth scramble later. But we did play exceptionally well and we're well on the way to addressing those defensive frailties that have cost us of late.

Can only echo the plea to the lost fans to come back and support a much more spirited and positive playing U's.

'...2 much needed points'? There was me thinking it's been three points for a win for about 30 odd years now.

As I said on the other thread. I'm disappointed by the comments of Stevenage manager Gary Smith - Watt planet is he on? Sorry, couldn't resist the pun there, but Smith's ref blaming comments are pretty tiresome. He claims the yellows in the first half were 'pedantic', they all seemed fair enough to me. Yes, the red changed the match, but it is beholden on teams to try and keep eleven players on the pitch, so Stevenage cannot bemoan their luck, The U's were the better team before the red card anyway, which probably explains Stevenage's robust approach.

Personally, I think old Cloughie had it about right, a manager should never blame the ref. If the manager is good at his job, he will get the right results. Smith should take the rough with the smooth, and he certainly got that today. He was very lucky to end the match with ten men, the Stevenage keeper was highly fortunate to go unpunished for that Scumacheresque tackle late on.

I Don't know if the Spanish are to thank for it, more Brazilian which the spanish copied lol. But yeah we did good, the passing was superb and all thanks to Eastmond in midfield for that, hes a great player defensively and attacking.

Dunne, the loanees which you have brought in are doing great especially Eastmond hes controlling the midfield and hes dedication defensively (Jumping head first in passes or shots, tracking back for tackles which I have to say are brilliant) and passing is superb. Please increase their loan deals and we could be looking for a high top 10 finish.

Also echoing the other comments on the supporters leaving, come back and watch this football its attractive and constantly puts smiles on the faces when leaving the stadium.

We will be there on Saturday! some great football being played and a few more goals this weekend.and another three points. Just hope we can extend the three loan players till the end of the season, think it is three months at the minute, but hopefully they can get this sorted and season end we'll see where we are. Can't wait till Saturday up the U's!
