Watt strike secures U's victory
Sanchez Watt grabbed the winner as Colchester United beat Stevenage 1-0 this afternoon to end their unbeaten league record.
Gavin Massey was denied by Stevenage keeper Steve Arnold early on, while at the other end Mark Cousins palmed away a Filipe Morais long-range effort.
Colchester finished the first half strongly and Jabo Ibehre went close twice before half-time.
Stevenage were reduced to ten men soon after the break when their former Southend midfielder Anthony Grant was sent off after picking up a second booking for a foul on Watt.
And Watt put the U's ahead three minutes later with a superb left-foot strike which flew past Arnold and into the far corner.
Colchester had their chances to add to their lead after that, with Arnold denying both Ibehre and Massey, while Anthony Wordsworth clipped the bar with a free-kick.
Stevenage defender Bondz N'Gala hit the woodwork with a spectacular effort late on but Colchester claimed their third victory in four league games under new boss Joe Dunne.

I was lucky enough to attend the match with a former U's man yesterday, and sit with the former players. Among our discussions we turned to a subject often discussed on here, the cost of football these days. One thing I'd not really thought about before, but raised by my host, was the high price of the programme. I'd not actually questioned it before, because although it's a bit pricey, I'd felt it pretty good value. It is packed with information, but if I'm honest, it's a bit like The Sunday Times when I buy one. I will not read most of it.
I'm sure there are those who will read it fully, but I reckon there's a fair few of us who basically want the squads, and something on who to watch out for with the opposition. The price of a programme certainly adds to the high cost these days, especially if all the kids want their own copy.
Anyway, I'll end on a positive, and say all in all a very good performance, and I would suggest if such standards can be maintained, the U's can soon be looking above them rather than below them in the League One table.

Thanks for your comments on the programme.
As you would expect, we believe the programme to represent good value. The price has actually been frozen for six or seven years now and is very much on par with the rest of the league - if not cheaper than the divisions above.
We always appreciate the feedback though - and we're on media@colchesterunit
ed.net if anyone wanted to discuss what is/isn't in the programme.
Cheers!

However have one negative observation - the recent tendency to use dark typeface on a dark background (dark red/purple etc.) makes reading it very difficult and I have 20/20 vision. It may be stylish but is not very user friendly.

If you compared that programme to one which you would get from another club the Colchester United one stands out to be more thicker, produced like a booklet and not stapled together and more attactive. The older ones which I got fall apart way to easily, these ones don't.
Just been reading the comments of Stevenage manager Gary Smith - Watt planet is he on? Sorry, couldn't resist the pun there, but Smith's ref blaming comments are pretty tiresome. He claims the yellows in the first half were 'pedantic', they all seemed fair enough to me. Yes, the red changed the match, but it is beholden on teams to try and keep eleven players on the pitch, so Stevenage cannot bemoan their luck, The U's were the better team before the red card anyway, which probably explains Stevenage's robust approach.

Thanks for your response. First of all, congratulations to you and your team on producing a first class programme, you obviously put in a lot of work to bring this together. And as I said in my first post, I do agree with you on value for money. You are getting a lot for three quid!
My point wasn't against the programme per se. For the likes of Surb and Jo it's obviously a great read, with lots of news about the U's, and so much better than watching the X Factor! However, my feeling is for some of us it will as said be a bit like when I buy The Sunday Times, in that it remains largely unread.
If I may I will make a suggestion? I've noticed those in the crowd with team sheets, I think you possibly give them out to those going for a corporate package? I wonder how it might work out and the practicalities of putting them on a general sale at a nominal cost? Those of us who won't read the whole thing, would at least know who is who down on the pitch. It might not help the hard pressed parent with all the kids wanting their own copy of the actual programme, but of course the only way of dealing with that (reducing price by reducing content), wouldn't be fair on Surb and Jo. I fully appreciate that's catch 22 for you on that score.
Finally, thanks for always being so welcoming when I go along, and taking the time to listen to my comments.
Cheers! (As I'm known on here) Winston.

I am a great fan of the programme and read from cover to cover on Saturday evening as anything is better than The X Factor!

I'm also pleased that Matt the media man has taken your comments on board. It is the first evidence I have seen that anyone at CUFC reads our posts.
It surprises me though that you buy Murdoch's newspapers. Don't let him poison your pure and unsullied mind.

Boris - I have in my time read Hitler, Stalin, Marx, Heyek, Trotsky, Friedman, Lenin, Mao, and even God (though like Hitler he only published the one book, and it's highly disputed if God wrote it). I think I have enough critical faculties to sniff out poison when it's about. I was even once invited up to Murdoch Towers in Wapping to help with some excellent investigative journalism the Sunday Times was working on (about big business and the state spying on the likes of us). But for the record I've not bought it since the phone hacking scandal.
