Watt strike secures U's victory

Watt strike secures U's victory Watt strike secures U's victory

Sanchez Watt grabbed the winner as Colchester United beat Stevenage 1-0 this afternoon to end their unbeaten league record.

Gavin Massey was denied by Stevenage keeper Steve Arnold early on, while at the other end Mark Cousins palmed away a Filipe Morais long-range effort.

Colchester finished the first half strongly and Jabo Ibehre went close twice before half-time.

Stevenage were reduced to ten men soon after the break when their former Southend midfielder Anthony Grant was sent off after picking up a second booking for a foul on Watt.

And Watt put the U's ahead three minutes later with a superb left-foot strike which flew past Arnold and into the far corner.

Colchester had their chances to add to their lead after that, with Arnold denying both Ibehre and Massey, while Anthony Wordsworth clipped the bar with a free-kick.

Stevenage defender Bondz N'Gala hit the woodwork with a spectacular effort late on but Colchester claimed their third victory in four league games under new boss Joe Dunne.

Well done U's – no mean feat to stop a good side's unbeaten run, and a measure of the improvement that was needed. Up the U's!

Couldn't attend the game today but another good result today and watching bk home in Winchester, it sounded like we were the better team again. Lets hope Dunne and the players can keep up the good work. Massive improvements made already.

What a super performance by the u's. We made a good team that has picked up some good results look very average today. Watt was brilliant from his early through ball and till he went off, but what impressed me the most about Colchester today was how quick they were to close down Stevenage even as high up the pitch as the half way line. Super

Superb game, I thought we were even better than last home game. passing was superb, only one negative might be the lack of scoring more. Hopefully people of Colchester will come out and support the u's, those that didn't go today missed out!

Great game nice one United. Watt/Ibehre were great going forward, and Eastmond was immense in the midfield and made the football flow with some fantastic interceptions, and tackles to stop Stevenage. The beast looks back on top form, and proves that he works best with Eastman. Fullbacks upped their game today, and were good. Not forgetting Bean who once again was great and is like an engine. Glad to see Henderson/Sears come on and continue the attacking threat going forward. You may have noticed that I had a little rant at Hendo a few days back, but he looked a different player when he came on.

the save by mark cousins and the command of his area there after and the sending off turned the game for us.stevenage looked thoroughly bewildered at times with skill and passing of the u's

Just been reading the comments of Stevenage manager Gary Smith - Watt planet is he on? Sorry, couldn't resist the pun there, but Smith's ref blaming comments are pretty tiresome. He claims the yellows in the first half were 'pedantic', they all seemed fair enough to me. Yes, the red changed the match, but it is beholden on teams to try and keep eleven players on the pitch, so Stevenage cannot bemoan their luck, The U's were the better team before the red card anyway, which probably explains Stevenage's robust approach.

I was lucky enough to attend the match with a former U's man yesterday, and sit with the former players. Among our discussions we turned to a subject often discussed on here, the cost of football these days. One thing I'd not really thought about before, but raised by my host, was the high price of the programme. I'd not actually questioned it before, because although it's a bit pricey, I'd felt it pretty good value. It is packed with information, but if I'm honest, it's a bit like The Sunday Times when I buy one. I will not read most of it.

I'm sure there are those who will read it fully, but I reckon there's a fair few of us who basically want the squads, and something on who to watch out for with the opposition. The price of a programme certainly adds to the high cost these days, especially if all the kids want their own copy.

Anyway, I'll end on a positive, and say all in all a very good performance, and I would suggest if such standards can be maintained, the U's can soon be looking above them rather than below them in the League One table.

I forgot to add, Smith can feel himself very lucky to end the match with ten men. How the Stevenage keeper stayed on after the Schumacheresque tackle late on, I'll never know.

Hi Smith W,

Thanks for your comments on the programme.

As you would expect, we believe the programme to represent good value. The price has actually been frozen for six or seven years now and is very much on par with the rest of the league - if not cheaper than the divisions above.

We always appreciate the feedback though - and we're on media@colchesterunit
ed.net if anyone wanted to discuss what is/isn't in the programme.

Cheers!
Matt

I am a great fan of the programme and read from cover to cover on Saturday evening as anything is better than The X Factor!
However have one negative observation - the recent tendency to use dark typeface on a dark background (dark red/purple etc.) makes reading it very difficult and I have 20/20 vision. It may be stylish but is not very user friendly.

I agree with Matt here, I think the programmes are a good value, for what you get in them. If you compared that programme to one which you would get from another club the Colchester United one stands out to be more thicker, produced like a booklet and not stapled together and more attactive. The older ones which I got fall apart way to easily, these ones don't.

Hi Matt.

Thanks for your response. First of all, congratulations to you and your team on producing a first class programme, you obviously put in a lot of work to bring this together. And as I said in my first post, I do agree with you on value for money. You are getting a lot for three quid!

My point wasn't against the programme per se. For the likes of Surb and Jo it's obviously a great read, with lots of news about the U's, and so much better than watching the X Factor! However, my feeling is for some of us it will as said be a bit like when I buy The Sunday Times, in that it remains largely unread.

If I may I will make a suggestion? I've noticed those in the crowd with team sheets, I think you possibly give them out to those going for a corporate package? I wonder how it might work out and the practicalities of putting them on a general sale at a nominal cost? Those of us who won't read the whole thing, would at least know who is who down on the pitch. It might not help the hard pressed parent with all the kids wanting their own copy of the actual programme, but of course the only way of dealing with that (reducing price by reducing content), wouldn't be fair on Surb and Jo. I fully appreciate that's catch 22 for you on that score.

Finally, thanks for always being so welcoming when I go along, and taking the time to listen to my comments.

Cheers! (As I'm known on here) Winston.

I agree with you, Joe, the content of the programme is very good, but the colours are disastrous, especially at evening games. I can only read a U's programme by daylight.

Winston, I'm so pleased that you were able to see such a great game with our friend. I wish I had been able to be there too, but I had a prior engagement, learning about the two Marxists who were on Southend council in 1897.
I'm also pleased that Matt the media man has taken your comments on board. It is the first evidence I have seen that anyone at CUFC reads our posts.
It surprises me though that you buy Murdoch's newspapers. Don't let him poison your pure and unsullied mind.

Boris - I have in my time read Hitler, Stalin, Marx, Heyek, Trotsky, Friedman, Lenin, Mao, and even God (though like Hitler he only published the one book, and it's highly disputed if God wrote it). I think I have enough critical faculties to sniff out poison when it's about. I was even once invited up to Murdoch Towers in Wapping to help with some excellent investigative journalism the Sunday Times was working on (about big business and the state spying on the likes of us). But for the record I've not bought it since the phone hacking scandal.

I haven't bought the Times or Sun or any other organ of News International since Murdoch sacked 6,000 of his workers in 1986.
