Rose nets winner for resurgent U's

Rose nets winner for resurgent U's Rose nets winner for resurgent U's

Joe Dunne continued his fine start to life as Colchester United's new manager by guiding his side to a superb 1-0 win at Swindon Town.

Michael Rose scored a fine free-kick against his former club with 20 minutes to go to put the U's ahead.

And that proved to be the difference between the two sides at the County Ground, as the U's secured their second successive win.

Colchester produced more of the coherent, passing football they had shown in their 3-1 win over Hartlepool United, last Saturday.

Anthony Wordsworth and Sanchez Watt both went close for them in the first half, although U's keeper Mark Cousins was called into action to deny Andy Williams and Raffaele De Vita.

Swindon boss Paolo Di Canio made three attacking substitutions early in the second half, in a bid to get his side ahead.

But Rose struck home his second goal of the season and the U's were fairly comfortable in seeing the game out, to register back-to-back wins in League One.

What a result!!!!

I listened to this on the radio and it sounds like colchester was the better side for 90 minutes. I would be interested to hear from anyone who went.

Well done to rose. He might make mistakes, but he won the points today. Appears that he was unpopular at Swindon too.

Wow - what a difference a week makes! Well done Mr Cowling for listening to comments and being brave enough to make the decision that was needed. Up the U's!

One of the best things I heard was Joe Dunne thanking the away fans for their support.
Lets not get carried away but I think Europe beckons.

I hope people stop having a pop at Michael Rose. He is turning in to a decent player. I know he made a few mistakes when he first came here but he is looking good now.

Well done to all the players though praise must go to our manager Joe Dunn for making all this happen in just one week through hard work, skill and attacking football. WE COULD GO ALL THE WAY NOW. GREAT RESULT LADS

Fantastic result, Joe Dunne has done a fantastic job to turn around these players, and by the sound of today's game, Col Utd had most of the possession and had a really good passing game, against a good Swindon side, who were in the top 6, before the game. If we had Ward we would have lost, but I was listening to the game thinking, we are going to win this!! Which I haven't thought of for a while. This football seems fun, and I can't wait for the next game already. Up the U's!!!

Brilliant result for the U's, and good to see the fascist Di Canio put in his place.
.
And well done Michael Rose. The Field Marshal is right, we should give him credit for his good work.

I am eating my words already! I doubted the new regime, but I am absolutely delighted at the results thus far! We don't win one game in 22, then win two on the bounce - home AND away! Well done, Joe, Mark and the Boys! Up the U's!!

To just say that we won at Swindon is a complete disservice to the new management team.We beat a team that had only lost once at home this season, and a side that were sitting pretty in 4th place before last nights' game.

The work ethic of Joe Dunne/Mark Kinsella & co should be rewarded by a decent home crowd, after we have disposed of Yeovil, of course. ;-)

Yes I went Luigi as its less than a two hour drive from where I live, plus been to the ground loads of times before so I knew where it was. We never outplayed Swindon but we contained them, with good tactics. We closed them down so quickly, we played them at their own game which they are very good at. To do this you need fitness in the team which last night proved Joe Dunne is getting it spot on, by pushing his players harder in training. We now look so much more composed ,passing the ball around with confidence again. The midfield holding the ball and pushing forwards. This is everything that I used to blog about that was wrong with the John Ward era. I could see very easily where things were wrong. It was never nothing to do with previous managers having better players to hand, It was just very bad tactics, from a very average manager, who never got the best out of the players he had available. Last night if Ward had been in charge and Izzet playing we would have just caved in. The midfield is now retaining possesion and moves forwards which then pushes the opposition back. Just so simple. I was proud again last night to be a Colchester United supporter and well worth the trip. Lets hope everybody on this site can now be UNITED.

Very pleased for Joe Dunne, the team(especially for Michael Rose) and the faithful fans who traipsed all the way to Wiltshire in these tough economic times. Also delighted that five of John Ward's signings starred in the wins against Hartlepool and Swindon and that two Ward signings,Massey and Rose, scored in these matches.
As Robbie Cowling pointed out : "John Ward has done more for Colchester United than many people realise."

Good point, and it should be remembered that John Ward kept faith in the latent abilities of Rose when ,quite shamefully, his name was being booed by certain sections of the South Stand when announced as being on the team sheet Having said that I made the trip to Swindon and was very happy that I did. Not many would have been at all disappointed if we came away with a draw , let alone an away win against an in form team.

Swindon Town fans have been criticised for chants about Michael Rose's wife during last night's match. Please see
Swindon Advertiser story,headlined :
'Rose a thorn in Town's side.'
Then read comments below.One fan,
Peatmoor Pirate, says : "The chanting about Rose's wife was bang out of order last night. Was ashamed to be a Town fan."
But other fans have reacted indignantly.One supporter,Redhouse Red,says :
"It was fine until Rose wound the fans up.He'd got very little grief until that point. It would never (have)started if he'd (kept)......his head after scoring the goal."

Rose became unpopular with some
Town fans when he played for Swindon. But did the chants last night spur him on and help the U's win
the match?.I hope that the Gazette
can speak with Michael and find out more.

R.B. Can you tell me what Mr Ward did good then.? I'm trying hard to think.
Personaly I think it was just cheap talk from Mr Cowling to keep John Ward sweet. Most people never disliked John, it was just the boring way he had the team playing. Im sure he would still get a good welcome from the Col Utd fans if he ever returned as manager of another team.

What good did John Ward do?:

1.Gavin Massey
2.Tom Eastman
3.Marcus Bean
4.Freddie Sears
5.Michael Rose
6.Brian Wilson
7.Clinton Morrison

All seven players recruited on frees.
Five started in the wins against
Hartlepool and Swindon, while two others - Sears and Morrison - were on the bench.

Crazy, thanks for your klnd words about the Ken Plant details(why isn't
Ken in the U's Hall of Fame?) and for all your good blogs, which I enjoy reading. It is not necessary for any of us to agree about everything or anything and if we did this forum would be pointless.I hope that you and the other U's fans have a safe journey to and from Yeovil on Saturday.Up The U's.

Okay RB ill give you that one, your right, but still not sure on Clinton as yet. You mentioning Ken Plant's name again,I had a nickname for him the brylcream boy. He always had his hair plastered in the awful stuff. Its a wonder the ball never stuck to his head when he headed the ball.
