U's stand-in boss Dunne has burning desire to succeed

Determined - Joe Dunne is focused on making his mark in the Colchester United hot seat. Determined - Joe Dunne is focused on making his mark in the Colchester United hot seat.

Joe Dunne wants to be Colchester United manager on a permanent basis.

And the U’s caretaker boss is determined to take his chance in the hot seat with both hands.

Colchester stalwart Dunne has been handed the reigns at the Weston Homes Community Stadium , following the departure of John Ward on Monday.

He is the bookmakers’ favourite to be given the job on a full-time basis.

The 39-year-old had a spell in temporary charge of the U’s three years ago, following Paul Lambert’s shock departure to Norwich City.

But this time he believes things are different - and he is fully focused on stamping his own mark on the role.

Dunne said: “It gives me an opportunity and I do want the job.

“Last time around, it was a case of looking after things until the next manager was appointed.

“When Paul Lambert went, we needed to stabilise things.

“The captain Dean Hammond had gone and David Perkins had asked for a transfer.

“I was dealing with those things as first team coach but this time it’s different.

“I want to try and put my stamp on it.

“If I don’t do that I might regret it and let myself down and there’s no grey area.

“I have a burning desire and ambition to do well and I want to get my own ideas and philosophy across.

“That philosophy has to be the same from top to bottom at the football club.

“I want total respect from everybody who represents this club."

I agree, Joe if you're reading this. Please change our formation to an attacking one (4-4-2) you would be highly respected.
Ward's formation 4-5-1 was boring and produced no fight or attacking what so ever.

We have a decent team, I will be there on Saturday giving my full support again. Hopefully other fans will be too.
I'm actually looking forward to this game, haven't felt that in a while.

Does not look too passionate in that picture, more like a younger version of Ward?

People say we don’t wont a repeat of appointments like Lambert & boothroyd well Cowling should also learn from appointing from within it’s about time we took are time let Dunne take temporary charge for a couple of weeks see who apply. Let’s not rush an appointment but get the right man for the job. Everybody knows Dunne’s passion for the club but as assistant manager hasn’t been successful very similar to how Ward was let’s move in a different direction.

Having considered at all the present managers out of work there was only two that really stood out for me Sean Dyche and Nick Barmby. Due to location I doubt neither would be interested in the job at the community staduim If Joe is given the job then I would be more than happy to give him my full backing. I like his attidude that he wants total respect from the top to the bottom. If he goes on those lines he wont go far wrong. This to my mind is where J.W. fell down, he was over friendly, to nice and taken for granted.Over the years I have had a few chats with Joe. Always very approachable, had his own ideas, but always gave full support to the person he was working under. You can learn a great deal from a person by talking to them, and I was always highly impressed by the fact he never slated anyone off and gave back his own honest opinion, though not to reflect from someones elses. To me he sells himself and that is why I think he will bring a fresh younger aproach to the club. He is ambitious, loyal, hard working and will bring the best out of the younger players. I watched a clip on the TV last night over the training ground issue, and they also showed Joe at the training ground. It was obvious the way he was putting the players through their paces that he means business this week. Roll on Saturday cant wait.

I should imagine some of the incidents that occurred during Lambert's spell in charge will have come flooding back to Robbie Cowling.

These incidents may have influenced the appointment of someone from within at the time - namely, John Ward.

All was peaceful at WHCS after Lambert's car roared off in the dust across the unmade car park and in the direction of Carrow Road ( after the two wheeled semi-circle ).

A few, well, more than a few, breathed a sigh of relief from the stairwell and the windows nearby.

Lambert certainly had a unique way of doing things, and one of his assistants was eventually knocked out by one of the players - which in the circumstances, was not entirely unexpected.

From what I heard Mr Cowling and Mr Lambert did not seem to agree on every aspect of running a football club.

A lot of people, myself included, like Joe. He may be very much in the running but Sean Dyche ( sought by several other clubs ) should be someone who the board also consider.

Whatever happens, a few straight wins would put Joe Dunne in a very decent position.

Joe is a long time servant of the club and I he should be given the chance to bring in a few loanee's and try and turn our fortunes around. There are very few managers, that we would be able to attract, that I would be happy to see in the hot seat but I do think a younger guy running the ship is the way to go. For now lets get behind Joe and get those elusive 3 points on Saturday.

My Son is in the same form as Dunnes boy at a Colchester Secondary School. As long as Dunne doesnt lose the next 4 games he has got the job. In my opinion he should be laid off too. Not the man to take the club forward. We will win Saturday because of the positivity of Ward going and it normally happens when a manager gets sacked but appointing Dunne long term isnt the answer. His contacts will be poor, remember he was a lower league average right back, and as Assistant Manager has to take some blame from Wards reign. As someone deperate to see the back of Ward, of course I will support Dunne if he got the job but I hope that isnt the case.

Joe will not need contacts to find the players he wants. He will find, and watch them himself first hand not take some one else's word for it. The man is a workaholic and you only have to read the local rag today to view his comments and views to what he wants to do within the club. Also how can you put some of the blame on Dunne. Ward had his own idea's and Joe respected that. Joe can now be his own man for a few weeks, and now its his chance to show what he can achieve.

Sounds like your sons mate has a way cooler dad than you are.

Everything that you have written contains no fact again. Just guessing.

Joe would have my backing. I have met Joe several times and even played with him a couple of times. I can tell you on a real level, that Joe Dunne is the nicest and most professional player out of all of the squads in years gone by.

Ha Ha, Do you know if Mr Cowling ever got the club's black Masserati car back from Lambert. I heard Lambert kept it, and I remember one particular day, seing Lambert drive the car like a lunatic up towards Severalls lane.

Well there is the first problem, the nicest, was that not said about Wd on many occasions, nice people don't win things especially in football?

Said by the man that recently said that if you have nothing nice to say, then say nothing. The trouble with you Super is, its your opinion or no ones, I was hoping with Ward gone so would you? As for Joe Dunne he is not the caliber of manager we need right now, there is so much dead wood to shift we need to bring someone in who will see the true light of day not someone who will adapt to what is there already!

Interesting point on the vote's for a new manager on this web site. 28% have voted for Sheringham. How the hell could he ever be a manager when he is out night clubbing most nights. You want someone dedicated to hard work and its certainly not him.

Maybe we agree that Sheringham might not be the best choice. But for different reasons.
I know you like the hard fist approach Crazy, but there is other ways and they do work. We now know that the soft approach did not work for Ward but it did for Coppell. We know the hard approach worked for Sir Alex Ferguson but it did not for Steve Kean. We don't know that Sheringham would not knuckle down and work hard so what he does in his spare time should remain there. He was a solid pro when he played. Besides Mcdonaugh made a squad for promotion out of drinkingh. My only worry with employing Sherringham is his lack of experience. Would he then bring in an assistant too? because him, Hall, Wilnis, Brown, Dunne and co have a lack of age about them.

Who cobbled together that list of names to be the next manager, what a joke.
