U's complete Morrison swoop

Colchester United have boosted their attacking options with the signing of Clinton Morrison.

The 33-year-old has signed a two-year deal with the U's and will join up with the rest of the squad at their training base in Holland.

Morrison, who was released by Sheffield Wednesday at the end of last season, has scored more than 150 senior career goals for a host of clubs.

Colchester manager John Ward had been looking for an experienced striker following the departure of Steven Gillespie and Kayode Odejayi.

And the arrival of the Republic of Ireland international has given Ward additional options in attack, ahead of the big kick-off on August 18.

Morrison, who spent time on loan at Colchester's League One rivals MK Dons and Brentford last season, could make his first U's appearance in their pre-season friendly against West Ham United on Saturday.

Well would you believe it? Misery guts here is actually starting to feel positive about the new season now, lol. If we can get a decent fullback and another keeper, I think we can nick the final play off spot.

Not prolific at any club or level, but very consistent and reliable at all clubs and levels.

That is two strikers out and what I believe is two better and more reliable strikers in.

Haha, thats exactly the type of striker i was talking about yesterday, plenty of experince know goal scorer in hos twiglight years, think we coukd have a really good partnership their
I would honestly say that this is the best looking squad we've had since lambert. Well done ward cowling, this last week doesn't seem like consolation but a team that could get to play offs.
I think cousins deserves hi chance, but I must admit with Richard wright still available maybe a monthly rolling contract?

Feeling optimistic, must control self.

Clinton is one of the highest scoring striker in C.Palace's history Super, he was prolific for a time. Over 150 goals in his career, 33 ROI caps and 9 goals. The boy has a pedigree Kayode can only dream of!!

As you say, two out, two better ones in. I'm not a huge Ward advocate but credit where it's due, been after Clinton for 18 months apparently. Rather excited now about this coming campaign, this really is Wards team now, make it count.

Yea, I just googled him. I must appologise. After I wrote that he was not prolific, turns out that on occasions..... he was. Turns out his record got a goal in under 3 apps is impressive. I always remembered him at Birmingham and Sheff wednesday. more.

Can't wait to see them in action now. He has always appeared to be a model pro.

Not unless he has improved since I last saw him play, there could be a change of tune from a few people. I sincerly hope however that J.W. can get the very best out of him. Often a change of club with some security added can do that. Things are certainly looking brighter and this has made me feel a lot more positive for the coming season. Welcome aboard Clinton.

Whilst he may not have looked the genuine article the last few appearances there is no denying his record and he has found the net at all levels he has played at. Not bad for an expected "disastrous" summer this is it? Im with super regarding the fact that who really on here wouldnt have swapped Kay and Gilly for Morrison and Sears? I like the look of this squad now and I think we have the blend just right. The likes of Ladapo can learn a lot from Morrison. This is another good move by JW and RC. Magnus staying on solved the other major problem too.On another note I think it's also important to note the comments virtually every player who has signed or resigned has said about JW. The guy is doing something right because all these guys comment on his attitude and character. Good to see the open day really busy too and lots of kids in col utd shirts and not man utd and liverpool ones for a change. This club is turning the corner I think. Can't wait for West Ham now.

The trouble is J.W. is to nice and gains no respect when things go wrong. The players then fail to respond and take him for granted. Last season did we ever hear him angry?Certainly not a good point in my book. Morrison will not do the amount of spade work Kayode did. That man last season held that forward line up front on his own. The times I saw him go to lay the ball off to someone and there was no one there to support him. I felt sorry for the guy. You all must have been watching different games to me last season, because both Gilly and Kayode never got decent service regards crosses and openings, so im not surprised they only scored a few goals between them. Gilly only got his few goals and that was only by chasing lost causes. To say we have signed better players is an insult to the two lads that have left. Okay i'm happy we have Clinton but he is a very laid back player and needs pushing to get him going. He will most likely score more goals than Kayode but he will still need the service and openings provided for him, which i am hoping Mr Bean will do. It certainly will not be through Izzet in midfield if he plays or without any wide wingers who all now seem to have departed from the club. Swindon will be the top team in my book this year and ive put my £50 bet on them getting promotion. Playing 4 2 4 with two wide atacking wingers and reverting to a 5 4 1 when needed. Nothing wrong with the players J.W. has signed but the tactics and style of play must change from last year or it will be exactly the same score, lack of goals.

This is the 1st time that I actually disagree with you. I didn't think Kayode or Gilly did enough to TRY and win the ball, and we're both shocking in front of goal at times (most times for Odejayi. We now have a fox in the box in Morrison, and a forward who will try and get the ball in Sears. All looks good for U's at the moment, and I'm hoping there's a partnership with Bean and O'Toole in the middle, with Woody doing what he is best at and staying on the left wing with Hendo down the right. Can't wait to blow out the bubbles of West Ham on Saturday and kick start this season. Up the good old white and blues

It is funny how far you will take your Ward bashing and lies.

If you click on the Colchester United official site, and read the Morrison thread, it clearly says that he feels that he needs a manager that will give him plenty of love (his words) and not the shouting, arm waving Sir-alex-Ferguson that you blab on about.

Plenty of managers in England including Mancini and Steve Copple don't do that mean streak that you speak of, so just put up with it and jump on board with the rest of us on the fun train to the weston Homes this season or stay in your miserable rutt of a life that you have created.

Good move for us I believe, if he fits in well with the squad like I think he will he'll work well linking up with others, but they are going to have to start passing and moving better and then he will bang in the goals which is what he can do!
Like most others I have got a lift in my spirits for the season ahead. Up the U's!

Super if you read John Wards comments today above he clearly states THAT I KNOW I WILL HAVE TO MANAGE HIM A BIT. Well I can tell you I certainly dont tell lies only write the truth and I have certainly not become fickle like some because the wind changes. I do not just watch the crap you care to watch every other week at the comunity stadium. I do watch other teams play, and take note of players ability, not just Colchesters. I'm sure.Morrison will be a reasonable signing for us,but will need his backside kicked from time to time because he does tend to become lazy. If you read another one of my blogs, I also said that this move for Morrison where he is now settled could bring the best out of him and make him a better player. I'm more than happy with the signing, and yes if it works that John Ward gives him a cuddle, then thats fine, but If he becomes a liitle laid back then John Ward will need to be the strong daddy.

Crazy: Bit harsh to suggest I was being disrespectul about Gilly and Kay. I've always appreciated their efforts and actually publicy backed Kay on his deserved "player of the year" award despite risking the wrath of what people, including your good self, have said on here slating Kay at all costs. My point was, and is, that I doubt many fans would have objected to an outright swap for Gilly and Kay for Sears and Morrison. Kay has been slated on here for years now and Gilly has been re injuries too. It seems now they're gone some just want to moan about what we have got. I dont think any of my posts have any been disrespectful so I take umbridge to the suggestion I was knocking them because I wasn't. Sears and Morrison are as good, if not better, than what has left. I don't really think that's a controversial comment to make is it? I also dont get why people need some lunatic manager running up and down waving their arms. Doesnt make sense to me. Half the managers who do that either do it for show or because they have no self control. Next thing some will say is we want Neil Lennon in charge swearing at officials and the opposititon because that makes him "passionate" and shows a "will to win". Different people have different styles and that's what makes the game and life what it is. Perhaps Ward may look a little lacklustre because he stands and watches the game. Why is that a problem? The people on the inside of the club, most importantly the players, always talk of their RESPECT for him. You dont respect people who are a walk over and let you get away with second best. I for one dont want a Lennon or a Di-Canio charging up and down, doing it all for show and for their ego. Passion yes and Ward has that. Listen to what he says, they are the words of a proud and passionate man who wants what we want: A succesful Colchester United. When he took over Cowling was quoted as saying "Ward took me to task" over suggestions he may have been past it as a manager. Sounds like he fought his position there. Let's give him a chance. This is probably his first real squad, free from all the bloatedness that was left by predeccessors. His record of what he has bought in compared to the fee's (or lack of them) is pound for pound better than the previous 3, if not 4, managers. Sears and Morrison for FREE, Kay and Gilly combined cost of more than 500k? There are reasons to be positive so lets focus on them. Who are we REALLY going to miss who has gone? Williams? Was getting worse each game for me and Cousins deserves his chance. Bring on the hammers.
