Kayode Odejayi is hoping his impressive display against Preston North End will help him keep his place in Colchester United’s starting line-up.

The powerful striker was a thorn in the side of the Preston defence, after making his first U’s start for more than two months.

Odejayi, 30, played a big part in helping Colchester register a 3-0 win over the Lilywhites.

He admitted it has been frustrating not being in the team, over recent weeks.

But having waited patiently for his chance over recent weeks, the former Barnsley striker is now hoping he will retain his place for the U’s trip to play League One leaders Charlton Athletic, tomorrow night.

Odejayi said: “Like any professional, I want to do what I’ve been brought in to do and that’s play football.

“If you ask anyone outside of the starting line-up, they’d say the same.

“But you just have to keep your head down and keep working hard and that’s what I’ve been trying to do.

“Luckily enough, I got back in the team and now I want to stay there now.

“When you’re out of the team, there’s no point sulking and not putting in a shift.

“You have to be ready for the call at all times and hopefully I’ve shown that.

“You just have to do your bit for the team and it’s not just me, everyone played their part.

“It was a bit not frustrating not to score but if you don’t do that, you have to look at what else you’re bringing to the team and hopefully I did enough.”
