Former Colchester United striker Jamie Guy will undergo an operation to pin his leg after he suffered a horrific injury playing for Braintree Town.

Guy, who progressed through the youth ranks at the U's before leaving them last year, suffered a double open fractured leg, breaking his tibia and fibula, in Iron's 2-0 win at Eastleigh, in Blue Square Bet South.

The 23-year-old suffered the injury with the game 20 minutes old, when Eastleigh goalkeeper Gareth Barfoot crashed into him in the penalty area after he had poked the ball past him.

Referee Robert Mackay awarded a penalty and booked Barfoot, before Guy was eventually taken to a Southampton hospital following a lengthy delay.

Guy, who turned professional at Colchester in 2004 and went on to make 59 appearances for the U's scoring three goals, is expected to undergo an operation either today or tomorrow.
