Ward plays down Abbott incident

Colchester United boss John Ward has played down an incident where he appeared to snub the handshake of Carlisle United counterpart Greg Abbott.

Ward seemingly refused to shake the hand of his successor Abbott, who he worked alongside while Cumbrians manager, at the final whistle of the entertaining 1-1 draw between the two clubs on Friday night, at the Weston Homes Community Stadium.

It was the first time the pair had been up against each other as outright managers since Ward's departure from Carlisle in November, 2008.

Ward said: “I must have just missed Greg Abbott at the end.

“It was a great game of football and that's what we should be talking about.”

I wouldn't blame John at all if he missed the shaking of hands at the end of the match! the way Abbott and Kavanagh acted the whole match on the side lines was a disgrace, shouting and swearing at the referee, coming over to John's technical area and acting like idiots. The fourth official like the referee was a disgrace and should have sorted them out. Very unprofessional the both of them. I gave the referee some grief when he came off with another fan, but I am totally fed up with the support, apart from the south stand who give it their all the rest of the stadium's pants, we have got to create an atmosphere in both support and against the other team to put them under pressure, that also goes for their management if they are acting ridiculous then our fans should let them know!

I can only agree haggydaggy.

Also the ref played the game like last season favoring the other side and he still only looks about 12. The standard of ref's is so poor
I will be writing a letter to complain but i know they will only answer: what you expect for league 1.

I agree Abbott was a bit naughty and very unsporting at times but oh boy did he raise his players game in the second half. He knew exactly how to motivate and get his team to play an attacking option,so to get his team back in the game. Our defence was at six and sevens and stretched to the limit. We do miss Reid when he is not in the middle and I thought both Baldwin and Magnus struggled against the fast and tricky frontman of theirs. We could have done with a bit more vocal from our bench but more still the crowd need to lift the players as well. Make no mistake Carlisle with the excellent signings Abbot has made during the close season will be up there at the top. Im glad Jason Price was out injured otherwise im sure we would have lost. At the end of the day we have six points and im happy to settle for that.
