Platt predicts good times for U's under Ward

Clive Platt believes John Ward can bring success to Colchester United this season.

The experienced striker has quit the Weston Homes Community Stadium to join former boss Aidy Boothroyd at Coventry City.

The 32-year-old has linked up with the Sky Blues for a nominal fee and is looking forward to returning to Championship football.

However, he is keen to stress how much he has enjoyed his three-year spell at Colchester.

And he is sure that given the right backing, the U’s are in safe hands under new boss Ward.

Platt told the Gazette: “John Ward has been absolutely brilliant and I think he’s a great appointment for the club.

“The club will do well under him, if he is given the right support.

“I’ve got lots of happy memories of playing for Colchester and I had a great three years there."

For all of the latest U's news, including a 2010-11 squad poster, see today's Gazette.

Clive, I think its disgusting that the Russians used you in a publicity stunt and hoisted you hundreds of feet up in the air before falling into the sea. Enjoy your new Donley sanctuary in Coventry.

Yes your absolutely right.....These moronic downbeats are certainly "NOT" Colchester Utd followers. Their knolledge of football, and more importantly their knolledge of sportsmanship......I

Thanks Nora I am sure you are right and these clowns are in the minority. After AB came to Coventry I visited this site and had some great banter with the real Colchester fans which was good despite the odd vulgar comments from the few odd balls.I intend to watch out for your results and would hope that some of you fans would keep an eye on AB'S results.I know he was not very popular at your club but just because a manager fails at one club does not mean he will continue in that vein Best Wishes for the New Season

Hello Bill

I always liked Platty he is not a goal scorer but played in the right way and given the service he will do a good job for you, as a chance provider for the likes of Eastwood. He is a much underated player a bit like Kem Izzet who also comes in for a lot of stick, but it is no coincidence that all of our last few managers have always used him regularly. My son is a great Col U fan (He had to be with a Dad like me!) but these days he can only take in a few games, because he now lives in Finham Coventry............

U,s fan nice to see another constructive comment.I think you have hit the nail on the head re Eastwood.Since we signed him he has suffered through not having a big man to play off.John Ward is quoted on BBC sport as saying that Platt will take a bit of replacing and you will have noticed that Platt had only good things to say about the Colchester fans and John Ward.Your son will not remember Mike Grice but you should. We signed him from Colchester and he eventually returned to the U's,a lovely winger. For my sins I have followed Coventry fo 50 years but it really does not matter which club you follow as long as you know it is your club and nothing will ever change that affection.I think it is hope that keeps us goingThat is why your son will never follow Coventry his adopted city and why should he? Best Wishes

Platt is a good player, thats when he does run into space, win the ball, block off players which he does not do week in week out. so get rid of him and bring in someone who can.
I tell you the people that come on here and make comments about people's not being u's fans really gets on my f**king nerves, its us who are the real fans telling how it is, not the fans who just go on about not supporting your team, they are our team, if things are not going right then we have the right to make our issues known, as this is a website forum about colchester utd and i contribute to their F**king wages. so nora and bill have your say but shut up about us having ours. if we were not fans then we would not take the time to write on here.

We must be about the same age Bill, my 1st Colchester United game was 1958 against Stockport County, I was just 5 years old, been a regular ever since, although I still miss Layer Road as I am sure you miss Highfield Road.
New stadiums are just not the same, and yes I remember Mike Grice, and a few others who have played for both clubs.

I think we beat Stockport 8- 2 in that game. Peter Wright on the left wing and John Evans inside left as we called it in those days.

Hi Bill Moore much like myself you have been watching football for the last 50 years. I can assure you if Boothroyd employs the same tactics at Coventry like he did here you will beckon the day he leaves. In all my years supporting Col Utd I have never seen such bloody awfall football last season,if thats what you would want to call it. Taking £25 of some ones hard earned cash to watch a game then I feel we have a right to have a good moan if its rubbish. I think I speak for the majority of Col Utd supporters in agreeing that Clive Platts move to Coventry is a good one for us. To me that just shows that Boothrooyd is clueless himself on signing good players fit for the championship. It was John Wards knowledge and not Boothroyd who knew Keogh, and O Donnell the two players you have signed but were destined for us before Boothroyd left. If those two make the grade which I believe they will the credit must go to John Ward and not Hooveroyd. The nice comments made by both managers regards Clive Platt are more complementary to him as a person than as a player. I agree he could win a ball in the air and lay it off but then thats where he stopped. Instead of moving for a return pass or being ready in the middle for a cross he was yards behind everyone else. He lacked pace and on corners for a big man never attacked the ball and put himself about to try and score goals. Thats the difference why Holt at Norwich though a big man with his aggresion and putting himself about in his play gets goals. If Paul Lamber had signed Holt for Colchester like he tried to then Clive Platt would have been left sooner than now. I wish Clive all the luck but I think it will be to much for him in a higher division. The fans here in colchester are very easy going but at Coventry fans will be on his back. Pity nutty 25414 Nora batty never went to Coventry with him.

Fair comment crazy you say it as you see it.All the U's fans cannot be wrong about last season however when AB came to us he claimed his tatics were governed by the type of player he had available. One comment he made was give me the right type of player and I will give you attacking football.Reading his comments on Platt My understanding is that he will be used as a bit player. If he makes a contribution to City great if not we have lost a years wages and with the amount of money the greedy big boys are taking out of the game I am sure nobody begrudges that to what by all account is a decent man.Coventry were 80 million in debt when Sisu led by Ray Ranson took over at the same time M P Geoffrey Robinson lost 19 million that he had given the club in loans and in shares if Boothroyd does not deliver these boys are not going to mess about so the ball is in his court.I would love to see him do a Watford but reading all the comments here you lads are ruining my nights sleep by putting doubts in my mind.Still Thanks for taking the trouble Crazy and Good Night

I have to hold my hand up and admit that I have often criticised Clive Platt, calling him the Plank, the Statue, and the like. His problem here was that he was not as quick as Chris Iwelumo, another tall target man, who was quicker on his feet and gave us fabulous service for a couple of seasons.
But what has become clear, not just from this report but from many others, including articles in our match day programmes, is that Clive Platt is a thoroughly decent person, and therefore I wish him well. Maybe he will blossom in the new environment, and rediscover the skills that he displayed earlier in his career.
Bill, I remember a nice exchange with you a few months ago, and I wish you and Coventry City well. I hope you get promoted this season, but if you don't, I look forward to our two teams meeting in the Championship next season.
The first time I saw the Sky Blues play was at Layer Road in the mid-1950s in the Third Division South. Jimmy Hill impressed us with a couple of dives which got free-kicks for your team. Each time he was writhing in agony, and then moments later he was skipping about the pitch like a spring lamb. As a callow teenager, I had never seen anything like it. Now of course it is routine. Happy days...

Spot on Bill you may be a little older than me but your views are very similar, SKY and money is killing football, players are earning stupid salaries even in the lower leagues and fans earning a few thousand a year are being asked to pay ever more money to support it.

It is all very sad in my opinion, modern day kids dont know what real football is.

Bill. Mr Boothroyd is a bull **** baffles brain man. He had the right players here to do the job but misused them or never used them at all. If he can find any exuse he will use it. Last season he promised to to give us the reasons why we missed out on promotion. Did he hell. One example of having the right players was David Fox who has now gone to Norwich. Never done any good under Boothyroyd but so far been Norwich Citys best player in pre season. I saw him play last saturday against Newcastle and he was spreading the ball from one side of the pitch to the other with precision passing and was voted man of the match. He is an outstanding footballer who was wasted by Boothroyds stystem that was used to try and play football. Even the best centre back on the books Balwdin was sent out on loan last season and he wanted him out. I liked Aidy as a person but sorry not as a manager.

Boris nice to hear from you again.Hope your team has a great season and look forward to further correspondence as the season progresses.Crazy can't argue with anything you say as I know nothing about AB other than what he tells us but I respect your views.AB would do well to remember that this is a club that sacked Chris Coleman a manager who did reasonably well at Fullham but was unable to score goals at Coventry. So right lads let's all have a great season and keep the banter going as soon as we have had a few games under our belts.Whether AB succeeds or fails I will be back and you can either say"TOLD YOU SO " or I will dig up some of the E-MAILS I have saved either way football will always win
