Colchester manager John Ward is running the rule over three players this week.
The U’s boss has invited former Southampton defender Lloyd James to take part in his pre-season training schedule.
And striker James Walker, most recently of Gillingham, will also be given a chance to shine over the coming fortnight.
Both players are free agents this summer.
Colchester will also assess the possibility of signing Ben Coker from non-league side Bury Town.
Ward said: “The three lads will be here for a minimum of two weeks which will take them up to our first pre-season game against Dover.
“Their job for me is to compete with the players that we have already got.
“We have a good squad and I think last year showed that.
“To try and improve that is not easy, financially or football-wise but we will try and do that.
“I think the players that were here last year will sit up with interest when new faces come in.
“I think people have thought it’s been very quiet with me being away but it hasn’t been; we’ve been very active.
“These guys have to show me that they can get into my team.”

The point im trying to say is that James Walker is far worse just awful, and to think about signing players like this is a backward step. It would have been far better to sign just two quality proven players a midfielder and a goal scorer than three to five run of the mill players. Dont tell me the players are not out there because two are available just down the road. To me this is bad judgement and only heightens the prospect of sinking deeper into trouble. Its like rowing out into the middle of the ocean then making a hole in the bottom and sinking. Im not a glory hunter by any means but what I like to see is good managment skills and decent business sense. Its obvious Robbie has had his fingers bitten by not paying enough attention ,reason he is now getting involved more with the club on a different level. If Mark Tierney goes as expected it will spell disaster as he was the saviour on so many occasions in defence last year. Good players sense whats happening in the club and naturally want to move on to better prospects and clubs with ambition.
Seriously crazy what you on about. i think you are 'crazy'. You wont be saying this if we get promoted next season would you? all i am saying is that don't lose faith. theres no point going to the beginning of the season, and you have already lost faith. Are you serious about Vernon, hes the most pointless player we have had. P.S don't call me a wimp, your the one who's a glory hunter.

Regards me watching other games I can thoroughly assure you it does not effect my support for Colchester United in any way. Most football managers watch other games to keep tabs on players they may be watching but it does not mean to say they are supporting them. I go and watch other games because of the love of watching football and to compare teams. I wrote on here early part of last season and said at the time we were not good enough to go up. The abuse I got back from the likes of you was ridiculous. I had seen Swindon,Huddersfield and Norwich both play a few times, way before we played them and could see that they all played good football. Nothing wrong with that just an honest opinion which was true. You believed and wrote on this site saying the Us were playing brilliant. Ive been around to long to know different that we would not make the play offs and struggle so it came as no great surprise to me we never made it. Regards finances believe me the Southend chairman has ruined that club and if you still want a team to support like Colchester then you do not start doing what Mr Cowling is now trying to do. Dont get me wrong I love young players coming through the ranks but you need some good quality experienced players as well. If you sell your top players like Southend have then your team gets weaker. Whats happens support goes down with less revenue and you get relegated. No one is slagging the team of its a word called being ambitious. If you want to pay £24 for a seat to watch a player called James Walker play then you more stupid than i thought. This guy at 22 has had more clubs and trials than ive had hot dinners. I know he is only on trial with us but surely the club can do better than this. We all know how weak we were end of season and with the better players either gone or leaving we need to strengthen. The outlook to that looks unlikely we will sign any further players to improve the squad. Finally you mention we have a cracking new ground. Well my honest opinion to that again is that I disagree. I suggest you do a bit of travelling to other new grounds recently built and do some comparing. I actualy visited the Ricoh Staduim Coventry last season when I had to go there for a business meeting in the confrence centre adjoining. What a lovely staduim and no wonder it must have appealed to Boothroyd. All enclosed if it rains you keep dry not like at Colchester in the west stand you get soaked with it being so open. Fantastic loads and loads of parking all solid tarmac not bloody pot holes and mud. The concoarse underneath is full of shops and places to sit down and eat. What is Colchesters just a rough old breeze block walls not even painted with a snack bar that rips you off. At least clubs like milton keynes, brighton and Southends proposed new staduim look like works of art. No wonder the ground has no feel to it with open corners and just looks half finished with a crappy bumpy uneven pitch that is worse than a park pitch.
To be honest I really don't care what other people think. Col U are my team period. I won't be watching anyone else this season. I will not be travelling elsewhere glory hunting or getting a "freebie" for a championship game because my missus works there. I will not slag off my team (only to me mates). If we play like garbage all season I will have still had fun watching the odd ocassional goal. We've got a cracking new ground and it's about time people got a grip. As for being in "financial trouble" do me a favour...you've just got to look at the Saffend for that :( I'd rather be a fourth division or conference side with great cup runs than aspire to be another Wimbledon. Just feel at this moment in time it's best we look in the reduced section. Up the U's!

Thats the reason the position they now find them selves in.. All im trying to say is that I do not want to see that happen at Col Utd but it will do if we do not take the action that is needed. Nothing wrong having a couple of non league players but you do need some quailty in the team to make it up and so far this season that has not happened. We need a goalscorer big time. It may still happen yet, but not with signing players like James Walker. Its just a point im making and not slagging off the team.
Absolutely clueless ;p Apart from the "half finished ground, fill in the corners" tripe. Your take on the Saffend woes is laughable. The reason they sold their best players is because they have no disposable cash. Hence them constantly in the High Court to face money demands. Having been in a transfer embargo for months now they can only sign loan players. With players currently being unpaid you will see the current exodus continue. Should I really have to explain this to you? If you need more information google it! Visit whatever game you want to but don't go slagging off the team, supporters and chairman before the freaking season has started!
