Colchester United have been praised for getting on with the job without manager Aidy Boothroyd

Colchester United assistant manager John Ward praised the professionalism of the club’s players after they took the bragging rights in the televised Essex derby.

The U’s saw off rivals Southend United 2-0 at the Weston Homes Community Stadium, thanks to a brace from midfielder Anthony Wordsworth.

Colchester’s plans for the big match were thrown into disarray before the match after manager Aidy Boothroyd was called away on his birthday because of a family illness.

Boothroyd left Essex at tea-time to travel to the Midlands, leaving assistant manager Ward and first-team coach Joe Dunne in charge of team affairs for the derby match.

And they helped guide Colchester to their first double of the season in Coca-Cola League One, at the expense of the Blues.

Ward said: “We had a situation when suddenly the manager is not here.

“The players were told at 6.15pm but they have to get on with it just the same."

I was impressed with the way Joe Dunne performed last night, I was sitting close by and he was organising and getting things to the players, he seems to be learning so much, when I saw him during the home Leeds home game he was OK but last night I was very impressed by him. He was even getting Odejayi to stay up on the half way line for corners, normally we don't have anyone, last night southend would always have two up! meaning we had to have three players back and thus meaning less players coming up for corners! Worth a look I think.

Yes I agree Haggy, Joe is learning fast. You would have thought he was the manager last night and looked like he was enjoying every minute of it. He is learning fast and in my mind will be the next Col utd manager.

Not that i want Aidy to go for a while yet, but i agree Joe was on the ball last night, well done Joe and also John for listerning to him in making the decisions.
He also kept a player up front which is the way to play.
Southend supporters were abit quite today at work. Hehe.
Come On Col U.

I also liked the tactic of keeping a player up the pitch yesterday, and that being Odejayi would of been an advantage if Heath lobbed it up field instead of into the stands, as we all know odejayi is very capable of running towards goal with it. Well done Joe and John. Also I hope Aidy is ok Up the U's

Its great to see such cohesion among the management at Col Utd. This can only reflect in a positive way on the players in the dressing room
