Wordsworth at the double for Colchester United

Anthony Wordsworth scored twice as Colchester United beat rivals Southend United 2-0 in the televised Essex derby.

The U's took the lead in only the third minute when Wordsworth's low shot from Clive Platt's cross was inexplicably missed on the line by Blues captain Adam Barrett and bobbled in.

Francis Laurent went close for Southend and keeper Steve Mildenhall saved from Marc Tierney, before half-time.

But Wordsworth doubled Colchester's lead just before the midway point of the second half.

He stabbed home from close range, after Kayode Odejayi had headed David Prutton's corner back across goal.

Goalkeeper Ben Williams saved from Matt Paterson and Frank Moussa and substitute Steven Gillespie was denied by keeper Mildenhall at the end, as Colchester claimed victory.

U's manager Aidy Boothroyd was absent from the game because of a family illness.

Game went okay, shame about the pitch, but we still performed, im more gutted eddie was tackled by a big dogs willy, i think thats what it was, couldnt really see from where i was.
Well done woody on two vital goals, but your still pants, best wishes to Aidy.
Im looking forward to work tomorrow, as we've some southend supporters. Come On Col U.

Watching this on the telly tonight two things really struck me. One - the quagmire; a real embarrassment and two - the gaping holes in the stands! If there was 6000 there tonight what on earth must it look like with crowds of half that which we've been getting? Sadly it shows that Colchester are punching above their weight and will do well to maintain the promotion push. If we can't get a full house for a local derby then when will we?
Apart form that, well done the lads! So sweet to see Adam Barrett writhing in the mud (this will be gleefully repeated on countless tv blooper shows - yes!) and the U's seeming to brush off their slightly bedraggled opponents. Well played Ben Williams - two very vital stops to keep us in it when the game should have been dead and buried. Still in touching distance of the top 2 - just hoping for some more slip-ups. Up the U's!

I don't know why some people keep knocking Wordsworth. His first goal was pure class ;)

Southend played far the better football than Colchester, but you can't play football on that terrible pitch and Colchester's style of play boring as it was was better suited to the pitch. I took a neutral with me and he said if I hadn't told him which team was which he would have thought the ones playing defensively and relying on breakaways were the away team, not the home team.
PS: to the bloke who watched it on TV and noticed the gaps in the stands. The gaps should be filled with people like you. We all froze almost to death for our team as did the Southend supporters.

Against the Budgies it was our side which made the mistakes in the mud. At least we learned from that, and made the best of the conditions, which were not nearly as bad this time.
The "gaping holes in the stands" were precisely because it was on Sky so that people like Bamptonian could stay home and watch it in comfort. At least there were over 6000 people like Crosby, no. 1, Feisty, and me, who were there to see this victory and cheer the team on. The stadium actually looked pretty full to me, comparing it with some recent games with under 4000.
And let's stop knocking Wordsworth. Sure he is still learning, he doesn't defend, his goals are not memorable, but he scores some, which nobody else managed to do this time. Give the lad a break.

It was never going to be a great game looking at the pitch but 2 things made my evening - a win against our arch rivals but even better, seeing Adam Barrett kneeling in the sand after his goal mouth blooper! I was cheering and laughing at the same time. I thought Ben Williams had a great game and made a couple of excellent saves. I also thought Platt and Kayode played well together. I thought Southend's pacy wingers Scannel and Francis Laurent caused us a few problems and I kept on thinking how badly we need our own pacey winger back in Mr Vincent. I hear he should be back with us in the next couple of weeks. A great 3 points and getter closer to Charlton! Up the U's!

I enjoyed that so much last night! First double of the season and hopefully another one Saturday.
As for the goal scorer I am not going to mention his name ever again!
Also we still managed to give more rest to Lisbie, Reid and Riberio with them not playing, just hope JJ is not to badly injured.
Well done everyone and best wishes to Aidy and family. Up the U's.

In my opinion the pitch is destroyed, I did comment a few weeks ago that the Norwich game should not go ahead to save the pitch and now it's going to be a long way back to it's best. Still on the bright side we could use it for beach football or beach volley ball, alternatively bring on the greyhounds. I certainly would not pay good money to watch football on that surface. The only bonus is the three points

What a load of rubbish this game was. colchester cant even fill the ground for a local derby!! the pitch is a disgrace the FL should make them play at a neutral ground until they sort it out. it doesnt make any difference to colchester though cos they dont play football, its just luanched into the corners for throws and corners typical boothroyd tactics midfielders are not needed !! when southend tried to play they carved colchester apart very easily and on a decent pitch would have won easily.
for them to be in the play offs is a joke, if they stay there anyone who gets them in the play offs will be laughing all the way to final . a few passing movments will win the game against them, nobody wants to see this type of negative football. i am not a southend fan either.

HAHAHA, i hear jealousy of col utd being where they are. And don't say your not a Southend fan, blatently you are one, if not why you commenting on here.

Colchester deserve to be where they are because simply we have done really well this season, bad loser.

Oh and i have to mention something to Bamptonian, the attendence was 6,466 because people like you can't be bothered to go and support your football team. I was there, and cheered ColUtd all the way, even when the temperatures were 0'c. You know why??? because i am a loyal supporter.

Yeah they do need to sort out the pitch, but they have to relay it, and hopefully that is sorted out soon. But then again if we can play on it? whats the fuss all about. teams should be scared to play us, no?

Oh one final thing, well done wordsworth, 2 sloppy goals, but you still need to improve your game, because personally i don't feel your work rate is good enough, your a lazy player, theres something you should learn 'TACKLE'

You must be upset that southend lost nevermind ay, we are where we are because we deserve it. Bamptonian, Bampton its people like you who don't feel the gaps!... Because you just want to sit at home and pretend you support football. If you have no interest in colchester or football why send such a negative comment. - The pitch was horrible yes but if it is rubbish to play on for one team then it rubbish to play on for the other... you don't need maths to work that out ! All in All the game was very good, we played some decent football, and didn't hoof the ball up in the air as people have mentioned. I enjoyed the game and was worth the freezing temperatures.

Steve86, i totally agree with all your comments.
Also thanks about the comments about wordsworth, least im not the only one that sees his faults, i never complain about the other players, yes they have faults but thats only everyother game, not week after week, like positioning/tackling
/vision/awareness/st
rength/movement shall i go on!!. im all up for playing a player and giving him a chance but when you have other players who have most of those attributes above then you must play them. im happy he scored BUT that does not happen on a regular basis to justify him as a first team reg. i will leave him alone now.

No need to fill it when you can watch it on TV numb nuts, also it was only southend.
Personally i went to the game as i wanted to see Col U do the double, but i was not too happy as after 4 mins yes 4 mins when southends goal keeper and defender started to make sand castles right in the goal mouth, is this not cheating.
the long ball tatic is used as the pitch is not in the best in the world, unlike southend who didnt seem to catch onto that until the last 15mins. (With Long Ball) i see you mention a few passing moves should win the game you did that for 75mins and still couldn't break us down.
Good news is though, least you wont be laughing at the end of the season. Going Down Going Down.

Well said white boy regards your comments Colchester dont play football. Though a staunch Col utd supporter not once this season have we dominated a match. We cant pass a ball if we tried to,due to the tactics used and im sure if it had been played on a normal pitch we would have lost to Southend. All those that have made jibes on your comments have not got a clue regards how football should be played and live in the land of cukoos.

Haha No.1 I agree. - About wordsworth tho, I'm not a fan of him also. Ok he seems to up his game alittle bit because of it being a derby, but why doesn't he up his game week in week out? I also saw some defending from him yesterday yes... I know I know, I couldnt believe it too, rubbed my eyes, throught it was JJ O'toole but the realised his cut his hair, then I thought it must be Prutton but no it was wordsworth! If he starts to defend like that more often and help Marc out then we will be enjoying his gameplay.

Why is it a slagging off comment Surb?. Dont you like the truth or can you not give praise to another team that did try to play football. Yes we played on a normal pitch at Southend and we were lucky to hold out for the last fifteen minutes. Then they pulled us all over the place and we were lucky to get the 3 points. And yes I was at the game. I am not afraid to give another team praise when they deserve it and I think in stages Southend played some good football last night considering the players they have. If you think how we play is entertaining then sorry you do know nothing about football at all. Last night it was bang upfield the majority of times. A win last night yes but performance wise still not good enough. After watching Swindon play at Southend last week they will do another Norwich on us. Magnus and Heath will have to be at their best against Painter because he has so much pace and will turn them inside out. Tell you what I would not even have Platt,Izzet,Wordswor
th on my subs bench they are not good enough. And you also reckon the game was good last night and we didnt hoof the ball up in the air. Well it must have been the moon then that I saw in the air and not the ball. Please tell me one thing surb did you ever watch the 2006 team. Did you ever see Neil Danns whack balls forward. Get out the DVDs of the 2006 promotion season and watch it closely.
