COLCHESTER'S Darren Mitchell is celebrating silverware success after helping England's senior amputee team land the Futbol Cup, in Poland.

The 29-year-old received a late call-up and, after a whirlwind couple of days, helped his country beat Ukraine, Italy, hosts Poland and world champions Russia.

He scored a goal in the opening game and also contributed an assist against Italy.

"It was a great weekend," said Mitchell, who grew up in Harwich.

"I was very pleased to score - a great way to cap my first senior appearance in seven years - and also with the assist, taking two players out of the game with a nice turn.

"Initially, I had been hoping to be in contention for the squad for the next Amputee World Cup.

"That's not going to happen now, though, because I'm still working on my fitness and I've still got another stone to lose.

"However, the gaffer is pleased with me as I've already shifted two stone."

Mitchell is no stranger to international action, having represented the Three Lions at the 2007 Amputee World Championships, in Turkey, and also the 2011 World Cup, in Argentina.

However, he drifted away from the sport and only got back in action earlier this year following encouragement from his wife and children.

Mitchell had his right leg amputated in 2007.
