PROUD Clacton Cricket Club skipper Imran Sheikh believes his side scaled new heights in Saturday's 21-run success at home to Haverhill.

It was an eye-catching victory against opposition who had been riding high at the top of Marshall Hatchick Two Counties Championship division two and there were numerous star performers - not least South African Harlan Greig.

The all-rounder scored a half-century, took five wickets and orchestrated a run out during an action-packed afternoon at Vista Road.

"It was a great win and this was the performance I've been waiting for all year," said a delighted Sheikh.

"After losing the toss and being put into bat, we had a mini-collapse at the top of the order.

"However, Harlan once again showed great maturity with the bat, scoring a brilliant 50.

"Mo Chowdhury was the other batting star, scoring a quickfire 62, and I chipped in with 56, getting us to 220.

"It was certainly a score I would have taken after the start we had.

"When we came back out, our bowlers were very disciplined, bowling line and length, and they were backed up by some great fielding, including two run outs - one from Bradley Pitts and one from Harlan."

Sheikh said Greig was the undoubted match-winner and described him as a constant thorn in Haverhill's side.

Having earlier hit 53, the South African performed heroics with the ball, returning five for 45 in his 14 overs.

"I'd say this was his best performance for Clacton, scoring a 50, taking five wickets and a run out," said Sheikh.

"You really can't ask much more from a player.

"Harlan is a match-winner within our team, either with the bat or ball or both.

"I hope he continues this form until the end of the season.

"We're hoping for a strong finish and if we play the way we did at the weekend we can achieve that."

Clacton are seventh in division two heading into this weekend's clash at Kelvedon and Feering (12.30pm).
