CAI James and Janet Austin were crowned champions of their respective Coronation Cups, at Colchester Golf Club.

James, playing off two, with a nett score of six under par was the winner of the men’s competition.

And Janet Austin (22) won the ladies with a nett of eight over par.

James set out his marker on Saturday of the 36-hole competition with an impressive nett 65 with the nearest competitor, Ollie Wilson (12), three shots adrift.

Jason Nicholls (0) and David Barnes (13) both registered nett 70s.

In Sunday’s second round, Russell Storey (15) stormed through the field with a nett 62 to return a two-round total of 136, claiming second place overall.

Matt Black (7) and Alan Sharrocks (3) both returned creditable nett 67s to secure fourth and fifth spots on scores of 138 and 140.

Maintaining his form, Wilson also returned 67 to cement his second place overall with a nett 135.

Impervious to all this was James, who returned a nett 69 from the second round to total 134 overall and win the Coronation Cup in style.

His first round 67 was clearly the lowest gross round of the competition and clearly the round of the weekend.

In the ladies' Coronation Cup, Austin (22) also set her marker firmly down in the first round with a nett 71, with Nesta James (19) finishing second (nett 77).

James then bettered her morning round by one to take second-place overall with a nett 153.

Although falling away with nett 81 in the afternoon, Austin had still done enough in the morning to maintain her lead and returned a total of 152.

Mandy Rix (8) was third overall and also returned the lowest gross.

Claire Hebden won the ladies support stableford with 38 points from her 31 handicap, beating Jenny Mitchell (14) on countback after an impressive 21 points on the back nine.

Caroline Chambers (22) was third with 37 points and Lesley Laxton (25) fourth, with a total of 40 ladies competing.

Colchester GC held its third Vets Open during the week with 46 pairs from 27 different clubs taking part.

It was the Stoke by Nayland GC pairing of Richard Cross (5) and Roger Toone (13) who took top spot, after returning 47 points.

They finished ahead of another Stoke pairing Paul Sheffield (13) and Tony Carman (13), who carded 43 points.

Braintree GC's Trevor Green (13) and Alan Simmons (9) were third, with 42 points.
