Toni-Anne Wayne says her Spurs Ladies swansong was “overwhelming” after she decided to hang up her gloves.

The former Colchester Town Ladies player has called time on a superb playing career as a goalkeeper which saw her represent six clubs and play for England in an Under-19 World Cup.

Wayne was given a fitting send off in her final game for Spurs against London Bees, which rounded off the club’s first-ever season in the FA Women’s Super League 2.

And the 35-year-old from Braintree, who was part of the Spurs side that won the FA Women’s Premier League and also lifted the Ryman Women’s Cup and FA Women’s Premier League Cup, says the whole day was a memorable occasion, as she donned the gloves for the final time.

Wayne told the Daily Gazette: “It was quite overwhelming – I was quite emotional and it was a little bit surreal. The whole day was amazing from start to finish.

“Jenna (Schillaci) gave me her captain’s armband for the day and I was very proud.

“When I joined Spurs Ladies, we were playing on a park pitch so to see it progress as much as it has done over the four seasons has been absolutely amazing.

“The backroom staff have done so well and it’s come a long way. I loved playing in the southern division and making the step up and it’s been an absolute pleasure to play with those guys and win things with them.

“I’ve got some great memories with the girls – we got on so well and it won’t end here.

“I’m most proud to be able to finish with this team because they’ve been my rock through tough times and they’re great friends.

“I’ll go and see them play when I can and go down and do some coaching.”

Wayne, who played for Spurs Ladies for four years and also represented Brighton and West Ham, is now hoping to play more for Colchester and East Essex CC Ladies’ side, in addition to Southend Hockey Club.

“I felt like I’d taken it as far as I could,” added Wayne, who wants to continue playing football but as an outfiedl player.

“But I do feel like I have a few more years left in me and it will be nice to get the chance to play out on pitch, which is something I enjoy doing and have done before.”
