JOHN Blackmore made no mistake in wrapping up the CHAPS stableford at Colchester Golf Club.

He finished victorious by two points, following the club's first Sunday competition of the year.

It will still damp under and above foot at least but at least the competition took place, following a barren fortnight where snow and rain made the course unplayable.

With buggies and trolleys banned to protect the course, all competitors had to carry but it was not a burden that hampered three-handicapper Blackmore. His intent was clear from the start.

After a birdie on the first he then went on to drop two shots, which were quickly nullified by birdies at the seventh and ninth, allowing him to turn one under gross.

Dropping just one shot on the back nine, his round of 70 gross gave him a stableford score of 39 which in the conditions belied his three handicap and was just reward for a player who gives more than he gets.

Kevin Brett (6), Harry Hills (5) and Dean Hughes (6) all produced solid performances on a wet and uncompromising day to finish two points further back, on 37 points.

Both Hills and Hughes recorded two birdies in their rounds, getting just monetary reward from the Two’s Sweep for this particular feat.

In total, 87 members took part in the competition, with the low numbers reflecting the bad weather start to the season.

Entry fees were donated to C.H.A.P.S., a Colchester charity that aims to raise awareness and support the development of new health services directly targeted at men’s needs.

For the ladies, it was another week of frustration after bad weather caused their competition to be cancelled.
