Colchester United are in talks with Kyel Reid with a view to the winger returning to the Weston Homes Community Stadium.

The 30-year-old attacker is now back at parent club Coventry City, following the completion of his loan spell at the U’s.

However, Colchester are still in communication with the former West Ham United youngster, who is currently serving a suspension following his dismissal in the U’s 4-1 home defeat against Cheltenham Town earlier this month.

There is a chance that Reid, who is out of contract with the Sky Blues at the end of this season, could return to Essex before the end of this month’s transfer window.

Colchester head coach John McGreal said: “Talks are still ongoing with Kyel Reid at this minute.

“It’s a case of having a little bit of patience, because he is still suspended. I do speak to Kyel on text; it’s a little bit on the burner because of what is going to happen with suspensions.”

McGreal has confirmed that Colchester are still looking to add to their squad, before the window closes.

The U’s completed the permanent signing of loanee Brandon Comley from QPR earlier this week on a two-and-a-half year contract and also drafted in Maldon and Tiptree duo Junior Ogedi-Uzokwe and Ryan Gondoh, earlier this month.

However, McGreal says there could still be further additions, in the coming fortnight.

“We’re still looking for players to come in to improve it,” he said.

“Players (they were looking at) have gone to other clubs throughout the week, so it’s not as if we’re not looking but we also have our own boys like Courtney Senior, Diaz Wright, Tariq Issa and Ryan Gondoh.

“It’s one where we’re a club of opportunity but we’re still looking to improve the squad.”

Leading scorer Sammie Szmodics is set to feature for Colchester against Grimsby Town tomorrow, with McGreal confirming that there has been no firm offers for the striker, or any other of his prize assets.

Szmodics was rumoured to be the subject of a £1 million bid from Premier League outfit Bournemouth earlier this month but McGreal said: “We haven’t heard anything on the players in the starting XI or in the squad, like Sammie and people like that.

“It’s more to do with Tony (Humes) and Robbie (Cowling), when and if offers come in.

“But we haven’t heard anything at this moment in time.”

However, McGreal confirmed that there could be further player departures, before the end of the month to follow in the footsteps of Craig Slater, Lewis Kinsella and Tommy O’Sullivan, who have all moved out on loan.

He added: “One or two could go out who are on the peripheral, I would imagine.”
