Ryan Jackson feels Colchester United’s improved recent away form shows that they are now learning how to be a success on the road.

Jackson netted the U’s opening goal at his former club Newport County on Tuesday night to help secure a 2-1 win and help them seal back-to-back away victories for the first time in 2017.

After losing their opening four games on their travels this season and shipping ten goals in the process, John McGreal’s side have now taken seven points from a possible nine away from home, in League Two.

Colchester will be aiming to continue their improved away form this weekend when they travel to play Coventry City at the Ricoh Arena – and right wing-back Jackson says they are feeling confident ahead of the Sky Blues trip.

Jackson said: “We have seven points from a possible nine away from home now and that’s what it’s about, picking up points on the road and taking care of your home games as well.

“We’re a newish kind of team and we’re learning how to play away from home and how to nullify our opponents’ threats.

“The games at home and away are always going to be a bit different but I think we’re getting the gist of it now and I think you can tell that from the recent away performances and results we’ve got.

“Hopefully we can build on the Newport win at Coventry, on Saturday.

“Confidence is a big thing and we have a good performance and win to build on and take into Saturday’s game.”

Jackson enjoyed an animated celebration after scoring at Newport, where he made 73 appearances between 2013 and 2015.

Jackson, who has now netted twice for Colchester this season, said: “I did enjoy my time here at Newport and I’m thankful for what they did for me but I do enjoy scoring as well.

“I’m just happy to get the win and the goal.

“I did a cheeky little celebration but that was more of an inside joke between myself and Mika (Mandron).

“That’s what I’m here trying to do, to score more goals and I’m enjoying it.

“When the ball is on the other side of the box, I’m there as a wing-back to make the box and trying to get a goal.

“The main thing for us was to get the second goal quickly and give ourselves that bit of a cushion.”
