Colchester United head coach John McGreal says they are unlikely to make any further signings before the new League Two season gets underway in less than a fortnight’s time.

McGreal says he is happy with his U’s squad following the arrival of four new signings, this summer and the return of several key players from injury.

He is also pleased with the impact of some of his academy players in pre-season, with the likes of Louis Dunne, Diaz Wright and Tariq Issa all impressing.

And after bringing in Mikael Mandron, Cole Kpekawa, Ryan Jackson and Rene Gilmartin, the U’s head coach is happy with the deals that they have done.

McGreal said: “I think that’s probably it for our business.

“If you look at the squad we had (at Braintree), it’s a healthy and competitive squad and we’ve added two or three young boys like Diaz (Wright) and Tariq (Issa) who I thought were fantastic coming in for their first starts of the pre-season and Louis Dunne, who got a good 45 minutes under his belt.

“We’ve got those boys that we can use too, so I think we’re more or less there.

“We’ve had a couple of players we’ve tried to nail down and it hasn’t quite worked.

“We had a few irons in the fire and it’s just been a patience game with Mikael (Mandron) and Cole (Kpekawa).

“We’ve kept our patience and we haven’t let anyone know which players we were targeting and kept it in house, because we know how good they are.

“I think had word got out, other clubs would have got involved which they were but it’s really good business for Colchester.”

McGreal believes he has good competition for places in attack, with Mandron’s arrival last week bolstering his forward options.

The Frenchman will battle Denny Johnstone, Kurtis Guthrie, Drey Wright and Tariq Issa for a place in the U’s starting line-up, this season.

Colchester needed to increase their firepower, following the summer departure of last season’s top scorer Chris Porter to Crewe Alexandra, in addition to Macauley Bonne leaving for National League new boys Leyton Orient earlier this month.

“Mikael brings something different to what we’ve got with Denny, Drey and Kurtis,” said McGreal.

“He brings a little bit more subtlety in and around the box – he’s another big lad but he’s mobile, as well.

“He’s 6ft 3in but he’s mobile, good in the air and has good movement, the same as Denny Johnstone with the way he’s been playing of late.

“He’s found his feet again and we have got good competition in that area where it’s the toughest thing to do, to try and score goals.

“Mikael’s had his pre-season – he hasn’t had the games but he’s up to speed and been training daily with the first team.”
