George Elokobi says Colchester United’s play-off chasing players were determined to finish their League Two away programme on a high note after winning at Leyton Orient.

The U’s triumphed 3-1 at Brisbane Road to chalk up their first three-point haul on their travels since beating Stevenage 4-2, on New Year’s Eve.

Colchester’s win at Orient extended their unbeaten run to five matches and elevated them to within a point of the play-off places, ahead of this weekend’s crunch final game against Yeovil Town.

Elokobi says it has given the U’s an opportunity to clinch a top-seven finish and the chance of promotion.

He said: “We knew we had to go for it and we said in the changing room to finish the season on a high away from home.

“We hadn’t had the best of away form and we’re still in it.

“It’s not over yet and we will have no regrets, come the end of the season.

“We had to put in a professional performance and I thought everyone to a man was fantastic.

“It was about getting three points and then, who knows?

“We have the chance to be in and around there on the last day of the season.

“We’re at home and we want to make sure that we finish the season on a high.”

Colchester’s game at Leyton Orient was halted with five minutes of normal time remaining after a pitch invasion by home fans protesting against owner Francesco Becchetti.

It took two hours after the interruption for the game to be completed, as both sets of players went through the motions in an empty stadium to ensure the fixture was concluded.

Orient’s players kept possession throughout almost the entire five minutes plus stoppage time that were played behind closed doors, following an agreement between both clubs.

Elokobi said: “Thankfully, the officials made the right call to finish the game.

“I wasn’t really happy with what happened out there for the final few minutes with the teams just knocking the ball about, if I’m being really honest.

“But they decided to keep the ball and we couldn’t get it off them but we were still switched on.

“It was fair enough for them – no-one wants to get injured with the game we’ve got coming up but we were ready.”

Colchester had led 3-1 prior to the pitch invasion, with strikes from Chris Porter and Macauley Bonne helping to seal their victory after Sandro Semedo’s fine strike had cancelled out Tarique Fosu’s opener.

Elokobi said: “They scored with an unbelievable strike into the top corner – I wanted to clap!

“But we knew we’d get a chance and when it came, we were going to take it and thankfully, Porter and Bonne both had great finishes.”
