Hakan Hayrettin says he would “probably” like to remain as Braintree Town manager after the club’s relegation from the Vanarama National League was confirmed at Aldershot Town.

The Shots won 2-0 to secure their own place in the play-offs, but for Braintree, the defeat set the seal on their drop out of English football’s top-flight.

They needed to win on the final day of the season as well as hoping results elsewhere went their way, but they are now contemplating life back in the National League South.

Hayrettin said it was normal that, as manager, some fans would place the blame at his door.

But after the turmoil of last summer, when all but three of the squad departed, and the troubled start to the campaign under Hayrettin’s predecessor – Jamie Day – he said it had been tough to turn things around.

“No-one likes to lose or get relegated,” said Hayrettin.

“When we turned up, there were nine points on the board and there were about nine or ten players on contract so I couldn’t shift them or move them.

“A few supporters showed their anger at me after the game, blaming me, and that’s normal.

“I accept that, but I’ll say it again, people at this football club need to be transparent.

“I’ve tried my best with my contacts to bring players in.

“The supporters have been fantastic and the chairman has been very supportive but it’s now time to reflect and see where they want to go and how they want to do it.

“I’ve never seen this side of it and if I was to stay and if I was given the opportunity, then there would be lots of changes on the pitch.

“The professionalism that I have tried to bring to the club, I can only do what I can with my resources.

“I need to look at things and go from there.

“The chairman has been fantastic and has backed me all the way but unfortunately it wasn’t to be.”

When asked if he wanted to stay on as Braintree Town manager, Hayrettin replied: “Probably, yes.”

He added that he would be talking to chairman Lee Harding in the next week to see which way both he and the club wished to move forward.
