SAM Southernwood returned to form with a bang to win Playgolf Colchester's second Club Championships qualifier.

Southernwood (13) carded a six-under-par nett 64 (gross 77) to claim victory and earn a well-deserved one-shot handicap cut.

He went out in 42 and returned just one over the back nine with a card based on seven pars and topped with three birdies, including a two on the par-three 16th.

Stalwart Mick Seaman (nine) was division one runner up with his card of 11 pars and par three birdies to total nett 67 (gross 76).

Paul Addison (8) was third with his card of nett 68 (gross 76) which consisted of 11 pars and a par three birdie two, again on 16.

Paul Marsh (14) won division two with his card of level Competition Scratch Score (CSS), nett 68.

He beat into second place James Wills (14), who carded nett 71.

Countback was needed to separate Steve Turner (15) Graham Adye (17) and Andreas Fantousi (17).

They all carded nett 72, with Turner’s better back nine taking the decision.

John Jackson-Smith (20) carded the round of the weekend, returning to the winning circle with a huge score of nett 62.

His seven pars and par four birdie earned him a two-shot handicap cut to play off 18, next time out.

Ashley Yates (18) was second on countback from in-form Trevor Hollingsworth (18), after both carded nett 68.

Playgolf Colchester's Leslie Wood team beat a strong Upminster team, in a first-round home tie.

Playgolf came out three-two up, after the morning Foursomes.

Steve Johnson and Paul Addison spearheaded the team, winning 2&1 to take a point.

Simon Longman and Richard Schultz had a long wait for the afternoon singles, winning their match 6&4.

And Steve Loran and Sam Southernwood tipped the balance with the final point, 5&3.

Playgolf's battling spirit was strong in the afternoon singles, with the deserved points coming from Paul Addison (two-up), Richard Schultz (one-up), Jack Blackman (4&3) and Christos Fantousi (5&4) and Steve Loran (6&5) doing the business with a strong tail wagging, securing the victory for the home team.

A large field entered Playgolf Colchester's Senior TC Easter Trophy competition.

Ron Gilzean held the clubhouse lead for a long time, until the final group came in with the winner.

Brian Ruffell carded a superb nett 66 to take the victory from Gilzean.

He topped a three-way countback tie with Mervyn Harwood taking third, edging Alan Kitching into fourth place.

Playgolf seniors beat Five Lakes Seniors by four holes in a friendly played in the Hambro formula.

Playgolf’s Ladies competed in the 2017 All Winners Trophy, in very favourable golfing conditions.

The competition, with a stroke play format, was keenly fought for by all 2016 competition winners, with only four shots separating the top-four positions.

Playgolf ladies’ captain Maureen Dale produced a round consisting of three nett eagles, three nett birdies and six nett pars to win with a superb two under CSS score of 68.

Lucy Sadler was just a shot off the pace on 69 with Ruth Amoss in third, two further back on 71.

Meanwhile, the 36 Handicappers battled it out for their own Special Stableford Format Trophy.

Emma Rowe who recorded an excellent 37 points to run away with victory, finishing six points ahead of second-placed Janet Blackmore.

Third-placed Rosalind Scott was a further point adrift (30 points).
