ESSEX University Boxing Club duo Lewis Richardson and Dan Azeez will be looking to make progress in the Amateur Boxing Association regional pre-quarter-finals this weekend.

England middleweight representative Richardson and ABA elite cruiserweight finalist Azeez are both in action at the Doncaster Dome, on Saturday.

Richardson is aiming to nail down a regular place in the England boxing team for the Olympics in 2020.

The 19-year-old would love to add the Elite ABA title to the many honours he has already achieved.

He said: “All the best boxers at my weight are in this competition so to take this title would be massive.

"Sparring is going well with some top people and I am feeling absolutely terrific."

Cruiserweight Azeez has moved up a weight to the 86 kilogramme division after campaigning at light heavyweight.

Sparring with the likes of Olympian Lawrence Okolie has encouraged him to take this next step as the struggle for opponents for light heavyweight is problematic, with a lack of competitive bouts.

The Essex University pair have been sparring each other in some competitive and learning confrontations.

Coaches Gordon Charlesworth and Simon Mullan are quietly confident in the application and determination of both boxers and feel sure this could be their time.
