ESSEX University Boxing Club junior Charlie Shave produced a fine display to notch up a victory in his first bout of 2017.

Shave (50kgs) showed off his skills to see off Rumbles boxer Alfie Quinn at the Winter Gardens, in Margate.

Having been training hard in the gym, his work output and strength was evident in his punches from the opening bell. Landing a good range finder left jab, Shave opened up with a straight left-right that landed bang on target knocking Quinn's head back.

The Rumbles boxer looked to put his own punches in but Shave's movement was spot on, to take the first round.

With his confidence growing, the Essex University boxer sought to capitalise his dominance, backing Quinn to the ropes. Some good body work, notably a hard left hook to Quinn's mid-section, caused the Rumbles fighter to hold momentarily.

Shave relaxing a little too much after throwing ones and twos, enabling Quinn to land good head shots and let the Essex University boxer know that he was not going to have it all his own way.

But Shave took the centre in the final round, putting together combinations that troubled his opponent and forcing him to hold and try to slow the pace down to claim victory.

Essex University's Matt Tagliarini took part in his first-ever bout against the host club Ramsgate's Harry Chambers on the same show.

The 14-year-old (50kgs) lost in a hard-fought contest, which proved a good learning curve for him.

Tagliarini is very apt in slowing the action down to his pace when sparring.

But Chambers was roared on by the crowd who showed no respect for any tactics by forcing the pace and holding the centre of the ring.

Throwing combinations, Chambers took Tagliarini out of his stride in the first round before the Essex University boxer was able to get his movement and left and rights together.

The single punches were not enough to subdue Chambers, who pushed on relentless.

Tagliarini showed lots of movement and potential but also found out that hard work is essential in the gym in order to handle the boxers who push forward constantly.
