RON Gilzean claimed a deserved three-shot victory in Playgolf Colchester's Turkey Trot competition.

Gilzean (12) took the spoils with the joint lowest-gross round of 77, nett 65.

His round started off with a bogey but he kept his cool and went on to card three straight pars and steady the ship.

Gilzean went on to pencil in an impressive 11 pars and play the course to utilize his handicap, as all bogeys came on holes where he receives shots.

That meant his score went unchallenged and he deservedly took the win for the butcher's voucher, by three shots.

Matthew Whymark (26) was second on countback with the highlight a brace of pars, ahead of third-placed Danny Withycombe (21) after both carded nett 68.

The freezing conditions meant the competition was a non-qualifier but the course was fully open and the main greens in play.

That said, they were a little tricky for the early groups, where hitting the green wasn’t always the best plan as many found out.

Playgolf Colchester's ladies' division one monthly medal was tightly contested, with only a pair of shots separating the top three players.

Nicky Withycombe won division one with her card of nett 73, a shot ahead of runner-up Ann Longman (nett 74).

Liz Schultz was a further shot back on nett 75.

Shirley Birkin had an emphatic win in division two recording a nett 75, four shots ahead of nearest rivals Maureen Dale.

Dale was second on countback from Pauline Jordan, after both players finished with nett 79.

Playgolf Seniors' mystery pairs competition was an enjoyable affair.

The competition saw all players complete their round, before a random draw was made with both scores tallied to find a winner in the clubhouse after the games have finished.

Peter Hughes (34 points) drew vice-captain Michael Johnson (33 points) to run out winners, totalling 67 points.

Peter Saye drew Dave Needham to finish second, ahead of captain Alan Cole who drew Paul Woods to finish third.
