COLCHESTER United head coach John McGreal has sung the praises of returning hero Owen Garvan.

The Irishman made his long-awaited comeback from injury to star in last Tuesday’s 3-0 victory at Cheltenham Town.

He then followed it up with a goal and inspirational man-of-the-match performance in Saturday’s 4-0 rout against Crewe Alexandra.

It was his first home start of the season.

“Owen was terrific and we’ve been waiting for him to come back,” said delighted U’s boss McGreal.

“He showed his composure and it was a terrific all-round performance.

“He thoroughly deserved his man-of-the-match award, although there were a few others pushing for it.

“Owen’s an experienced boy and he loves to get around the pitch.

“I’m sure Craig (Slater) and Tom (Lapslie) really benefited from having Owen in there, because he just brings that air of calmness around the place.

“The boys want to play football and we’re not going to turn our backs on what we’re trying to do at the club.

“Some of the football (against Crewe) was terrific and Owen has added to that.”

In addition to Garvan, Colchester have also welcomed back defender George Elokobi, after his recent loan spell at National League neighbours Braintree Town.

He too has played in the last two games.

McGreal has also confirmed that another senior head could be on the verge of getting back in action.

Lloyd Doyley was in the squad for the Crewe match but not on the bench.

“Lloyd was close to making it,” said McGreal.

“He’s trained a couple of times and I just thought I’d stick with the squad and the numbers we had the other night, but he’s another voice in and around it and I want to get him back involved as well.

“I do think that experience does help these younger boys and there’s a lot of respect there.”

Colchester are in Essex Senior Cup action at home to Ryman League division north side Witham Town tonight.

The sides are set to meet in a fourth-round tie at the Weston Homes Community Stadium (kick-off 7.45pm).
