Braintree Town manager Jamie Day felt his team got punished for the two times that they switched off in their Vanarama National League game at Barrow AFC.

Despite having taken the lead from a Chez Isaac penalty in the 21st minute and had the better of the play for much of the opening 45 minutes, the Iron were caught out by goals at the end of both halves at they lost 2-1 in Cumbria.

Richard Bennett levelled the scores on 42 minutes after the Iron defence were unable to deal with a long throw-in and Byron Harrison tapped in the Bluebirds’ winner three minutes from full-time after Alex-Ray Harvey’s shot had come back off the post.

Day said: “I’m disappointed with the result as I felt we deserved to get something from the game.

“To concede so late is disappointing as I thought the boys put in a good shift and we played well in patches.

“We changed the formation slightly and I’m just sorry that we switched off twice and conceded two goals.

“We switched off from the long throw for the equaliser.

“We knew they use the long throw a lot and then, for the second goal, we didn’t clear our lines.

“We had a chance to clear it and didn’t and we then didn’t react after the initial shot.

“The disappointing thing is that the two times we’ve switched off, we’ve been punished for it.

“I thought we were in control for good periods of the game and I didn’t really feel threatened, but if you do switch off, then you do get punished for it.

“I thought we’d get something from the game even though we conceded that goal late in the first half.

“It was disappointing, but we started the second half well.

“We had to dig in at times, but you expect that.

“We defended well, but we just switched off twice and the boys have been punished for it.

“I don’t think they opened us up from open play, while we had good chances in the second half and didn’t work their keeper enough.

“I’m just disappointed for them because they deserved more.”
