GUY Lennox finished a point clear of the field to record a deserved win in Colchester Golf Club’s stableford competition.

Playing off eight, he set about the back nine with a vengeance after completing the first nine in a handicap-equalling four over.

He birdied the 12th and bogeyed 15 and 16, coming home in just one over gross.

Russell Storey (14) and Michael Carroll (11) were both one shot behind after each scoring 38 points, to take second and third spots.

Geoff Lawrenson (14) along with Alan Sharrocks (2) both returned 37 points to complete the minor placings.

Sharrocks, although returning the lowest gross of the day, let the possibility of a win slip through his fingers with a double bogey on the last.

Colchester ladies at the club had no competition this week as they held their Open, which was won by the Benton Hall team of Sofie Ahmed, Mary Graham, Jackie Geller and Sue Ward.

Returning 36 points in the Saturday Stableford was Jonathon Gilbert.

Playing the front nine in just one over par and a back nine in four over, he completed the round in a handicap equalling score.

Hard on his heels was a pack of five, all returning 35 points.

They were separated after the countback, with Michael Berry (20) securing second place followed by John Saleh (13), Cllr Lewis Barber (5), Steve Jennings (5) and David Wrycraft (15), who was sixth.

The Colchester Vets friendlies continue unabated, with their latest home match avenging last year’s defeat by Frinton with a 4½ to 3½ win.

In the 14 matches played so far this year the Vets have won eight, lost four and halved two.
