FC CLACTON record-breaker Aaron Condon admitted being delighted and relieved after registering his 100th Seasiders goal.

The skipper netted twice in Tuesday’s 3-0 success against Thetford Town, at the Rush Green Bowl.

As well as bringing up three figures overall, it took his season’s tally to 30 – a new club record, beating the previous best of 29, plundered by Sean Hillier in 2008/09.

“I’m really pleased and absolutely delighted to be associated with the record,” said long-serving Condon.

“I also feel a massive sense of relief and I’m glad it didn’t go to the final day of the season, on Saturday.

“Thirty goals in any league is really good and I feel proud to be mentioned in the same breath as Sean.

“He was someone I looked up to so much.

“He was the main man when I was coming through and he set such a great example of goalscoring.

“It’s nice to think I’m hopefully somewhere near his level.

“The boys have been great in setting me up and hopefully I’ve taken more than I’ve missed this season.

“I’m glad they weren’t tap-ins, too, because I’m not associated with that type of goal.

“I’m pleased they were goals I worked hard for and took well.

“The most pleasing thing was the result, though.

“It’s about the team – not me – and I wouldn’t have wanted to get the record if we’d lost 3-2.”

Clacton are guaranteed an 11th-place finish and could sneak into the top 10, depending on Saturday’s results.

The Seasiders bring the curtain down on their campaign with a home match against Gorleston.

“The target now is to end with another win and finish as high as we can – hopefully in the top 10,” said Condon.

“Nothing less than three points will do and it would be really nice to get a good crowd along for our last game.

“Eleventh, at least, is a big achievement and all credit to [manager] David Coyle.

“We wouldn’t be half the team we are without him.

“The players are the same as before.

“It’s just that he gets the best out of us and encourages us to play attractive football.

“He tells us to go and do our thing, as attacking players.

“He wants us to express ourselves and we’ve scored quite a lot of goals, especially against the teams below us in the table.

“It’s a privilege to be part of this team because the boys are great.

“In the second half of the season we’ve really turned it on and effort levels have gone up dramatically.”

In addition to his goals, Condon felt he should have had a “definite” penalty and also praised midfield teammate Jordan Brazitis.

The 19-year-old scored Clacton’s second with a spectacular 40-yard lob.

“That’s a hard technique, but I see him do that all the time in training and he showed what he’s capable of,” added Condon.

There was a bizarre twist at the end of the game when Thetford keeper Matt Barker was red-carded for headbutting one of his teammates, for giving the ball away in the build-up to Clacton’s third.
