BRIGHTLINGSEA REGENT boss James Webster believes his promotion-chasing side will benefit from more rest and recovery time in the closing weeks of the season.

Regent are preparing for their penultimate midweek fixture of the season - tonight’s rearranged Ryman League division north clash at Haringey Borough (now subject to a 2pm pitch inspection).

After that they only have one more Tuesday match, when they head to Witham Town in another rescheduled game on February 23.

Every other fixture left is on a Saturday, apart from the Easter Monday showdown at home to Wroxham.

And Webster believes the clearer schedule could help his side as they strive for a play-off spot.

“It’ll be good to get some training sessions in on a Tuesday night,” he said.

“When you’re only playing at the weekend, you can prepare a lot better.

“You know who you’re up against and set certain things up in training.

“It’s rare at this stage of the season that you can get on the training pitch on a Thursday.

“The lads are shattered and they need the rest and recovery.

“Most of the boys are on their feet all day for work, so we’re really looking forward to these midweek games dipping off.”

Regent are sixth in division north, three points behind both Thurrock and Cray Wanderers and only five behind second-placed Harlow.

“Every year I want to do better than the previous season and we’re looking in good shape to have a real go at the play-offs, without any injuries or suspensions,” added Webster.

“Hopefully we can build on this position and keep the momentum going.

“It’s great having something to play for.

“It keeps the fans engaged because there’s nothing worse than going through the motions in those last few games.

“Thankfully we haven’t had that since I’ve been here.

“I like the play-offs because they keep the season alive for a lot of teams and makes it more competitive “Even if you’re eighth or ninth, you think you can sneak into the top five.”
