MALDON Golf Club has held its annual Trophy Presentation Night.

All sections of the club came together to celebrate individual and pairs successes over the course of the golfing year.

The event was extremely well attended and was again coupled with a marvellous social evening for members, family and friends including a fine firework display co-ordinated by past-captain Nigel Cook and immediate past-captain Jimmy Culleton’s son Neil.

Committee chairman Tony Davis and his young daughter Amelia once again excelled in providing a fantastic barbecue throughout the evening for everyone.

Amelia deserves special mention as she has been an outstanding, cheerful and polite helper at Club barbecues over the last two years.

The Trophy Night was the final official engagement for 2014/15 club captain Jim Culleton, lady captain Kate Stevenson and seniors’ captain Ray Hollington.

The stand-out recipients on the night were Sue Gardiner and Mary King in the ladies’ section, past-captain Pete Hawkins in the men’s competitions and Dave Butcher for the seniors.

Culleton also used the event to present his Captain’s Charity cheque for the year to Rebecca Woollger from Breast Cancer Care.

The charity is particularly close to Jim’s heart and his wife Maggs was a stalwart support throughout his year as captain, helping him to raise a record-breaking total of £10,374.94.

Woollger gave a short speech expressing her sincere thanks for the money raised and explaining a little about what support the charity offers to breast cancer sufferers and their families.

The men’s Winter league continued on Sunday with a betterball bogey competition played off three-quarters handicap.

Many pairs found the going very tough in high winds but there were still some good scores returned.

The winners on the day were Pete Hawkins and Martyn Cook with a score of +4.

Second on +3 were Aaron Dickson and his substitute partner Stuart Reece-Ford.

Four pairs returned a score of +1.

The countback placed Keith Denny and Tony Last third, Alan Buckingham and Sam Cummins fourth, Richard Nash and Jim Scott fifth and Des Bastian and David Follows sixth.

The weekly nearest-the-pin prizes went to Stuart Reece-Ford on the par three fifth/14th hole and to Pete Hawkins for the closest second shot on the par four sixth/15th.

With three of the eight weeks of the first league completed the league leaders are Pete Hawkins and Martyn Cook on 64 points.

Second are Alan Buckingham and Sam Cummins on 49 points while Ricky Todd and Nick Rushen lie third on 48.
