Colchester United manager Tony Humes says they have plenty of attacking options ahead of the trip to play Millwall this weekend.

But he admits they cannot rely solely on their attack to get positive results this season.

The U’s have hit the net 26 times in League One this season, with only seven sides having scored with more frequency.

But their 3-1 home defeat against Coventry City means that they have also conceded 37 league goals, more than any other team in the Football League.

Humes says he is looking to add cover in central defence and says they need to ensure they have quality at both ends.

Humes said: “If you look at Macauley Bonne, Marvin Sordell and Chris Porter coming back from injury, we’ve got options up there.

“We’re quite healthy in that department.

“But we can’t just rely on that; we have to be a bit tighter and do things a little bit better.

“We have to steel ourselves and be brave enough to go to Millwall next weekend and get something.”

Humes had words of praise for Bonne, who has scored five goals in his last two games for Colchester.

The 20-year-old continued in a wide-right attacking role for the U’s against Coventry City, where he scored his side’s consolation goal.

“It’s great for Macauley because he continues to score goals,” said Humes.

“You could see that he found it a bit tougher playing out of position and that’s something we were aware of.

“He did OK against different opposition in Wealdstone but he came up against a good left-back (against Coventry) and found it a little bit harder.

“But if he keeps scoring goals, then he’s going to put himself in the spotlight.

“From our point of view, if you have someone like Macauley putting the ball in the back of the net then we’ve got a chance.”
