Scott McGleish says he has made sure he is tip-top shape to face his former club Colchester United tomorrow.

The Wealdstone player-coach is likely to be on the bench for the first-round tie, at the Vale.

However, the veteran striker says is ready to face the U’s, for whom he spent three-and-a-half years and made more than 180 appearances.

McGleish said: “There are other players who are playing in front of me who I’ve got to compete for a place with.

“I’m not as fit as I would like to be but that’s because I’m also coaching now and I’ve made sure I’m in good shape for the Colchester tie.

“The beauty of the FA Cup is that anything can happen on the day - on their day, any team can win.

“Colchester are fitter and technically more skilful than we are.

“We’ve got boys who go to work but they come to play every week and they love it.”

McGleish is now 41 but after making nearly 700 Football League appearances, he says he has no intention of hanging up his boots just yet.

He said: “I just love playing football and as long as I don’t make an idiot of myself doing so, I’ll still play because it’s all about enjoyment for me.

“When we got promoted at Wealdstone in 2014, I scored 28 goals and last year, I scored 13 or 14 goals.

“This year, I’ve taken a bit more responsibility on the coaching side of things.

“The manager’s asked me to step up a bit on that front and I take on all of the training sessions with him but I’m also there as a player, if the manager needs me.”
